My family and I stopped at this little place while passing through Lincoln city. Had we known what we were in for, we would have gone somewhere else. My fault for not actually reading more of the reviews. The food was actually pretty good, but because of the rude staff, poor customer service, long wait, and lack of cleanliness we can only give it two stars. We'd love to give it 5, but the entire experience isn't worthy of a 5 star rating. It started when we walked in the door and barely had room to walk towards the counter amongst the 7 tables that are cramped into the small space. There were several "rules" posted around the tiny restuarant, beginning with "don't sit at a table until after you place your order." Fortunately we were lucky and a table opened up right after we ordered. The table was dirty and the only person they have cleaning them is the cashier. The lady at the counter, Big Ginger, told my husband, "it's gonna be a 40 minute wait" in a less than helpful, pleasant tone. When he said, "ok" she reluctantly reached for her order tablet and rolled her eyes. We waited about 30 minutes for the food. I had the fish tacos which were very tasty. My husband ordered the 4 piece combo with halibut, cod and shrimp, which he said tasted fresh and was not too greasy. The clam chowder was good, with a great flavor and very creamy. It was peppery with not a lot of potatoes or clams. The icing on the cake was over hearing the cashier say to the cook, "I'm trying to get rid of these people by telling them it's a long wait but they don't care." If you don't mind long wAits, poor customer service, rude staff and a disappointing bathroom (not clean, no soap or paper towels) then the food here isn't too bad and you might enjoy it. Needless to say, the overall experience wasn't that great and we won't be going back.

The fish was good. We had the halibut, cod and shrimp. I've had better clam chowder. I agree with other reviewers that it was very peppery. The thing that bothered me about this place was the staff. They were very rude. The restaurant was very busy when we visited for lunch. Comments I heard the staff make were "Tell those idiots to move those tables back." (Tables are not allowed to be moved at J's) and "Cheap ass." said under a staff person's breath when a customer asked for small bowls so they could share their family-style cole slaw. I read through some other reviewers comments and sounds like there have been other similar experiences. The food was good, but not THAT good. I don't think I'd go back because of the unpleasant staff.

Delicious! I had the traditional 3 piece Cod. The price was good, average for a coast town at $8.50 which includes your choice of potatoes any way (reg fries, curly fries, or fresh made potato chips), coleslaw and a drink. The fish had a very nice light batter. The fish was not overcooked at all, it was nice. It was fresh tasting. The tartar sauce was on point. The curly was were just curly fries, nothing exciting about it.. I should have tried the potato chips. Overall, clean space, very friendly staff (don't forget to tip :D ) Only thing is that its kind of hard to see off the freeway. Look for the ASIAN IMPORT/DECOR/FURNITURE and it is across the street! Kudos J's!

Once in a great while you have an experience at a restaurant where the food and the service are in such stark contrast with one another that you don't really know what to say. J's is one of those places. Just walking in to the place is off-putting, due to the number of signs on the door. Signs that set a very negative tone, right off the bat. Once you get inside, you see more signs directing, demanding and requesting you to do and not do (mostly NOT do) certain things. It's a bit overwhelming and heavy-handed. The gal working the counter was fine to start with but the longer we were there the more troubled by her I became. The most alarming thing about her (aside from NEVER checking on anyone once they were seated and had their food) was her leaning on the counter, playing with her cell phone. We all know that phones are gross and this lady handles our food after handling hers. Not a good feeling. Toward the end of our visit, a couple young missionaries walked in. She did not greet or welcome them at all, just instructed them that it was "to go orders only" because they were closing in 15 minutes. I have worked in the restaurant business and if someone came in before closing time, they sat. You don't lock the door and go home at closing time, you stop letting people in but you serve the ones who already are. Additionally, there was no way to know when closing time was because their posted hours are "11:30 to close." Now, about the food... The fish was excellent! I'm not going to knock it or act like it was sub-par because of the other aspects of the visit. I had the four piece combo basket with one piece cod, one piece halibut and two shrimp. All of it fantastic. It was cooked perfectly and the breading was superb. I ordered a cup of their clam chowder also but it was a tremendous disappointment and was overpriced for what it is. Actually, I had chowder from the steam table at Safeway yesterday that was head and shoulders better than the stuff I had at J's. Seriously, I'm not sure that there were actually clams in the chowder and the one bite of potato was not fully cooked. The soup itself was less creamy in consistency and more gravy-like. It was slick and not good. Honestly, if I'm ever in town for a weekend and want to get dinner to eat at our homebase, I might call J's and order TO GO - the fish was THAT good - but I will NEVER eat in that place again.

I ordered the 3 piece cod with curly fries. It was amazing, fresh, perfectly breaded, crispy, but not fishy. Suggestion Order the 3 piece cod with curly fries It was a long wait, but it's sooooo much better than Moe's . Moe's is basically Denny's with a view. This was amazing fish and chips. It's a greasy spoon, but it's totally worth a try. I was not disappointed. Moe's = disappointment.

The best fish and chips in town, always fresh, and they have great chowder as well. It's a small place and if it's the busy season (summer or a school break) there may be a long wait, but you can call in your order for pick up ahead of time--might want to give it 45 min or so.

Delicious and affordable. We had the halibut fish and chips, and the fried shrimp. This fried shrimp was the best thing I put in my mouth on my entire Oregon Coast vacation. Great coleslaw, yummy, buttery chowder, and I really appreciated the spicy cocktail sauce! Great experience overall!

Whoah! Wonderful Chowder!! Since Mo's sucks and the fancy Seafood restaurants are a little out of our price range, we decided to check out J's based on their great Yelp reviews. Fresh Friendly Great, I mean, really great chowder! Worth the wait for amazing seafood in a super casual environment. Casual is a must when you have britches full of sand from spending the day on the beach.

Just to update, 4 years later from my original 5 star review, we still give this place 5 stars. Great fish and chips! Get the cod, try the salt and pepper homemade chips. That's what we order every time we get down there (a few times a year). Remember, this isn't fine dining. This is place is basically a dive. Want special treatment? Go somewhere else. Want good fish and chips? Get it here! We go here for the food, not dining experience.

This hole in the wall is a good place to stop and get some fish and chips. My husband and I planned a spur of the moment road trip from San Francisco to Portland over Memorial Day Weekend, and on our trek back home we decided to drive along the coastline. As we made our way down we knew that we'd be stopping for fish and chips somewhere along the way. Thanks to Yelp, J's happened to be the location. What you should know before you go: 1. They accept call in orders. Had we known this we would have called in our order on the way there. 2. The place is small. If my memory serves me correctly, there were no more than seven tables. The entry way is narrow, so you can't really sit and wait without incoming guests bumping into you. 3. Because of #2, there can be a wait for a table if you plan to dine in. We got lucky because we snagged a table fast. 4. The wait can be long. We came in on Memorial Day, and waited over 45 minutes for our fish. The cashier had to remind everyone that came in that orders were piling in so the wait would be lengthy. We decided to wait. We came in at rush hour (noon-3:00 p.m.), and we knew we'd have to wait at least 20 minutes based on the number of people in the restaurant. 5. They have MULTIPLE rules! Everywhere I looked there was a sign barking about what to do and what not to do a. Due to an increase of costs, drinks will no longer be included with your order. b. $0.50 refills c. Throw away your trash. d. Save the red baskets. e. Bathroom for customers only. f. Bathroom key on the counter. g. Bathroom in the back of the store (parking lot); once you're in there TURN OFF THE LIGHT AND LOCK THE DOOR BEFORE YOU LEAVE!!!!! I can go on, but those are the ones that stuck out in my mind. The food: My husband and I split a four piece combo (one piece of cod, one piece of halibut, two shrimp, fries), and we each had cups of clam chowder. The food was piping HOT when we got it, so we had to wait a bit for eating. The chowder was thick and creamy; we both found it to be tasty. The breading on the fish is more Panko breadcrumb style. It's not like the beer battered fish I'm used to, but I thought it was tasty. You can also order chicken strips, straight fries, curly fries, or salt and pepper chips. Happy fish eating!

Food was so good, perfectly cooked cod and friendly service. It's an extremely small space and you might have to wait for table but it is worth the wait. Will be going again for sure!

Great, simple fish and chips. Good bang for your buck. Hot, fresh, fries were delicious. We got an order of regular and curly fries. We got a family order of cod and one of shrimp. Both were amazing. Considering how large our order was, they were quick. The inside is pretty small, if your party is larger than 4 people you're probably better off getting it to go.

Finally after bookmarking this place as a place to try I can finally check them off. I got a 3 piece of halibut fish and chips with a bowl of chowder. The clam chowder was very creamy and rich. Not a lot of clams but a decent amount of cube cut potatoes. My bowl had quite a few pieces of whole bay leaf in it. I didn't mind since it was a good indicator that it was made from scratch. The fish was breaded and fried perfectly. Decent sized portions and they were very moist, not dry at all. Fries were great and with the malt vinegar they were the perfect side. The small cup of cole slaw was bland and could have done with some more creaminess or celery salt to kick it up. Would visit J's again in the future.

Best hole in the wall ever... Homemade chips and slaw

My daughter had a wish to try some halibut fish and chips. We looked up J's and thought we would try the halibut. When we went in the special was "halibut nuggets". We ordered two specials and when we got home were we surprised!! There was so much halibut and it was so good. We loved our meal and had enough left over for lunch. Will definitely be going back to try other items on the menu.

  • Lindy C.

Clam chowder could have had a few more clams but flavor was great. Clam strips were yummy as were the fish tacos. I don't even like cole slaw and I really liked this one...light and not sopping in dressing atmosphere very basic just go strictly for the food nothing else lol

Yum yum yum. My boyfriend and I come here all time when we are at the coast. There is a wait but well worth it. I never liked Cole slaw but tried theirs and it was so good. I love to get the curly fries with my meal.

  • Jasmine A.

The food is okay. Was hoping they would have fresh rather than frozen fries, but no luck. The girl working was mostly on her phone the whole time, and never came to check on us. The place is really tiny with hardly any seating, so I would recommend getting it to go.

  • Sarah V.

Delicious! Cod fish and chips were fantastic. The homemade chips were an added extra special touch. The clam chowder was perfection. We'll be back!

Quoted 30 minute wait. We were told to wait around because it should have been sooner but it's been 55 minutes and we are still waiting. Frustrating. Come prepared. Lovely people but... We missed the sunset in that extra 25 minutes.... Unfortunately not even the best fish and chips can rescue this experience:( UPDATE: Really good food. I highly recommend the rockfish. I was pretty heartbroken when I wrote the initial review. It's good food, just be prepared just in case they are busy:).

    (2)
  • Rob R.

Fish was fresh and very good. Wish they would have had some non-fried options. That said the batter was light and good. The place was clean, but the staff could have cleaned up a bit if they plan to be out in the dinning area. Casual seaside atmosphere, ya a dive, but hey thats kind of what you expect for good fresh seafood. They could use some more seating. Service was kind of slow, but it was because they cook each order fresh when ordered and it was worth the wait.

We had one of those trips to the coast where our plans to eat a leisurely good egg breakfast at home were thwarted and we wound up grabbing a ziploc of homemade muffins and a couple of iced mochas from Black Rock on the way out. Not bad but not satisfying. When we got to Lincoln City we were starving and there wasn't even a question of where to go. We grabbed hubby's parents and went to J's. Yes, its run down. Casual, we will call it. Yes, plastic utensils. Plastic paper lined baskets. Yes, there are very few tables. Yes, you will be nickel and dimed for soda refills (50 cents) and a second little thingy of cocktail or tartar sauce (25 cents). Yes, they have signs everywhere telling you what to do. That said. I had a three piece ling cod special for $9. Iced tea, homemade salt and pepper potato chips, coleslaw and 3 good sized pieces of tender delicious cod in a panko crust. Crispy not greasy. Perfect. Princess had the kid's meal: one piece cod plus curly fries plus rootbeer $4. She ate some of my cod too. I'm nice. Hubby had the 4 piece combo: one halibut, one cod, two shrimp, coleslaw, regular fries and a drink $8.50. MIL had fish tacos. They looked awesome. I think they were $7ish. Father in law had 7 piece shrimp. Don't know what that cost...all of it for five of us was about $35. The woman at the register was super nice so I put a good amount in her tip jar. I like them. Clearly a little family business trying to do the right thing. Delicious fried fish. Really. Go get some

Best fish and chips on the Oregon coast. The Bowpicker in Astoria runs a close second but J's wins the crown

Well as I sat waiting my 30 to 45 minutes as described by so many I read Yelp reviews. Yes there are signs up to direct people get it to go then take it and go. To don't bring your to go garbage back in.. Kind of funny really. Then the comments about the ginger behind the counter. I am guessing she reacts to how others are with her. She was helpful, pleasant, and offered better customer service than I received from other locations on this day. Now let's get to the food... Special of the day rockfish, with chips and one with curly frys. Great fish, great chips so so on curly frys. Coleslaw Yeah dry not my thing. Clam's some of the best I have had. Chowder.... Was described by another as fish flavored gravy.. Yeah pretty much a calories waste of time. Very little meat and potatoes. Over all average. Unlike others service was good Food was pretty good, and wait was OK unless alot more people to mess with while you wait.

It certainly isn't fancy, but it sure is good! Some of the best fish & chips I have ever had, and they're something I order on a regular basis. I love the crispy panko batter. It isn't so thick that you can't enjoy the fish. The lady at the counter said they had just gotten the cod off the boat that day, and you could certainly tell how fresh it was. The coleslaw and tartar sauce were both wonderful too. The fries were basic fries. It's a small space, so you might have to wait to get a table when it get's busy. It was so good that we ended up here 2 days in a row!

  • T.J. B.

Let me start off by saying...! I love J's fish and chips! I love the fact that this little restaurant can turn out such a high quality, breaded fresh fish and chip medley. The food is consistent, flavor full, and quick. You can even watch them (if you are tall enough) bread your cod and deep and fry it up! Their homemade chips are pretty special too. Simple, clean, and good. Enough said!

My favorite for fried ocean goodness--shrimp, clams, halibut and fries, on the coast.

  • Gary A.

Best seafood in town is in this small place. Other Lincoln City places are better known, but this place has fresh inexpensive food. Often in the slow winter months, it has little business. Now in April it is nice to see a lot of business. The clam chowder is great, as are the fish and chips. The freshly-made potato chip are a special treat. The service is always friendly. Great food, great prices, greet service.

  • Dar J.

I wish I could give this a couple of more stars, but we were disappointed with the food going in knowing J's was rated #1 on Yelp in Lincoln City. Long wait for food, limited seating and the shrimp and halibut were just so-so. I had curly fries with my shrimp and my husband had regular fries and the regular fries were not cooked enough. The curly fries were just a little better. The cole slaw was bagged with tasteless dressing. Prices were reasonable food was just okay.

  • Cyndi J.

This was our fourth choice, after the other places were closed or had a long wait. I wasn't eager for fried food, but we were tired and hungry. We walked in, and the woman behind the counter said, "it's a 30 minute wait for a small order, 45 for a big one," almost like she didn't want us to bother her with an order. Since it was just the two of us, I was confused, but we ordered anyway. I kept waiting for Robert Irvine to pop out, filming an episode of Restaurant Impossible. The place clearly needs a really good cleaning, and the staff needed a dose of customer service training. I'm not a germaphobe by nature, but this one almost was beyond my comfort zone. Almost, I was still hungry. The clam chowder was barely tepid, and lacked seasoning. The fried food basket (we each got a combo with 2 shrimp, a cod, and a halibut) was merely average. The breading was decently textured, but not as flavorful as I would have liked. The curly fries were clearly frozen from a bag. I feel bad being so negative, but this place was really not good.

This is the freshest, best halibut fish n chips I have had in I can't remember how long! Even the cole slaw was delicious A great local place It's now September 2014 We got to go to Jay's fish and chips again Seriously this is the best halibut fish and chips that I can remember ever eating! Fish is so fresh and perfectly cooked The coleslaw is so good! Now if you want to talk about atmosphere they don't have any Reminds me of the soup Nazi on Seinfeld... Should just feel darn fortunate they even let you come in and sit down and eat this fish! Crazy... it is worth being treated matter-of-factly and without much of a sense of customer service...because the food is so amazing. We go out of our way when we're on the coast to go here and get the halibut fish and chips, it is that good

    (5)
  • Brenna W.

What a great dinner ... we love local and this is as local as it gets. The food was balanced in flavor and was so simple. The only complaint is the tarter which was a bit too pickly but over all so good and a great take out experience.

  • Tam L.

We were craving fish and chips so we decided to stop here based on reviews. It wasn't that busy and the wait was about 25 minutes. Drinks do not come with your meals. You must pay for them separately, which is fine but apparently they used to. The lady at the register went into a spiel about why they took it away, and raising costs and whatnot. Anyhow, though the fish was super tender, it was just too oily for us. Fries were just like any other fast food joint and nothing special. We got our food to go, and they didn't give us any ketchup. Paid extra for ranch and squirted ketchup from the dining area into our Togo containers. Clam chowder was the worst we've ever had. Super soupy and NO clams. About two potato chunks. It was a bowl to go. Probably wouldn't eat here again.

Ate at J 's again today. Always good, fresh and local. Their clam chowder is amazingly creamy! Try J's while in Lincoln City.

  • Erin H.

I sold my soul to devil, apparently. Hubby and I ate here again, but this time ordered ahead of time over the phone. I gave a scathing review last time based on the owners snotty sign(s) and his response to my review, but fried fish is on my list of 'items I don't cook at home' and so we have no choice but to tolerate the "fish nazi". This time were ordered the 3-piece cod meal which is $4 cheaper than the halibut and indiscernible from it, in my opinion. It was great. The chowder was better than last time, but the potatoes were raw. The coleslaw was terrible. Eat here if you're willing to act as a character in Seinfeld's 'soup nazi' episode. Don't be friendly, don't try to cheat the system, read all sign carefully, and move quietly through the line, lest you be told, "No fish for YOU!"

Best cod !!! Salt and pepper potato chips that they make our D licious. Shrimp was good clam chowder good plus you can buy fresh eggs from the its just a great place right on the highway open 7 days a week we ate there 4 times in as many weeks maybe 5 times really like it prices are good we will definitely stop there when coming

Grabbed some food to go. AMAZING clams and REALLY good fish tacos! Its also nice to have a "quick fish and chips" place have super tasty coke slaw. You can taste the freshness.

Love this place. Food is good. The only thing is restaurant is small and service is a little slow. Best to call in and order to go.

    (4)
  • Ashley P.

I probably crave their fish tacos on a daily basis! Best fish tacos ever. Honestly, I could probably eat 4 or 5! The fish and chips are good too. I've had both the halibut and cod, I prefer the halibut. The clam chowder is think, and flavorful. The place is tiny, and can get crammed, so we usually order it to go and take it home. It's pretty decently priced. Not fancy, but I'd definitely go here over a fancy sit down restaurant any day! Definitely make this stop when in Lincoln City:)

  • Travis S.

I did like the fish & chips here, but the keyword is DID. I got the worst food poisoning of my life here; from said fish & chips. The customer service is subpar, on their best day. My Girlfriend asked if they could hold the cabbage on the fish tacos and the lady refused to. I couldn't believe it! It would actually be easier for them to make them without adding cabbage but she refused, telling us "They come with cabbage." She was quite rude about it. Should have walked out right then & I would have saved myself a day or two of misery. Never been back since & will never go back again. The attitude of the lady that served us was good enough reason to not go back but I'm not a fan of food borne illness either.

J's has the best fried fish in Lincoln City, and I've tried nearly everywhere in town. They also have a generally annoyed and petulant vibe. Victimized by their own success (the place is way too small and they just can't keep up with orders), the owners typically seem overwhelmed by being in the the restaurant business and have no problem taking it out on the customers. Expect to be nagged at (both verbally and in handmade notice form), for several items to be out on any given visit, and to wait 45 minutes for your lunch. :Here's the funniest part: the place is situated next to a shuttered restaurant and lounge (the Hilltop, been closed for years) that could easily be turned into a spot where the J's people could both quickly serve their customers and make a pile of $. So to recap: great fish, but problematic place to eat.

  • Mai V.

We stopped here for lunch due to the reviews. Upon arrival the tiny place was crowed. They only have about 7 tables in the restaurant. Once we ordered the cashier asked if we were dining in and we started yes, she than went to clean off an unoccupied table quickly so we could be seated.

  • Erin B.

J's is a family favorite of ours and one of very few places we must eat at every time we visit Lincoln City. If you go there and expect them to be like Skipper's and have your food ready for you in 5 minutes, you will be disappointed. They are a small business that operates out of a small kitchen. That being said we have never been treated poorly and have never had a bad experience at J's. Sometimes we've waited 45 minutes for food, but it has always been worth it. Halibut fish and salt and pepper chips are definitely the way to go. I see their awards on the wall for fish tacos but I haven't been brave enough to try them yet. (I'm very picky about my fish tacos) but I have no doubt they are delicious! Bottom line: if you're a snob from the city and have zero patience and outrageous expectations then don't bother. Plan ahead and be patient and you will love J's as much as I do!

  • Wendy P.

The clam chowder was okay. It was quite peppery and just mediocre. The worst part was the waitress that was loudly telling customers about her problems with the police and her court appearances. She was them too busy arguing with her child on the phone and complaining about the cops to him to serve the people waiting at the counter to order. I never would have stopped here based on the appearance, but the reviews were good. I should have judged this book by its cover.

Best fish and chips i've ever had in Lincoln City, i'm so glad Yelp lead us here! It was 4pm on a Saturday and a huge order left them running a little behind, but the woman at the counter told us before ordering it would be about 45 minutes. Now, I think we would have waited longer than that to even get seated at any of the other places along the coast, so we took a seat and sipped our Drinks while we waited. Call me crazy but I love Cod just as much as Halibut so thats what I went with and I was pretty happy with my choice. The batter was great, nice and crunchy and I got some huge hunks of fish. The meal also came with cole slaw and curly fries. Both my husband and myself left full and happy and look forward to returning next time we are in town.

Decided to stop for fish and chips while in Lincoln City. Found J's on Yelp and was glad to see it marked as good for kids. We were amazed at the food! We ordered the 10 pc. cod family meal because they were out of halibut. It was perfectly battered and fried to a golden brown. The cole slaw was fresh and tasty and the kids enjoyed the curly fries. My favorite was the homemade salt and pepper chips. So glad my husband decided to add it to our order. I don't think I've ever tasted chips as delicious. Will definitely come back the next time we're in town!

  • Nicole M.

The fish and chips were awesome i think they are just as good as a more expensive restaurant. But even though the food is good there are still some things I didn't like. The owner is super cheap charging 50 cents for ranch, extra tarter sauce and drink refills. Even fast food joints don't charge extra for refills. That being said the fish is great, the owner is nice, and I'll be going back again!

Sooo soooo good. I now can only get fish and chips here because every other place falls short.

Great food, Great Prices, I'd give it 5 stars if the seating was better. They have a lot of rules posted but they are reasonable. They are doing the best they can with the limited space.

  • Paul S.

This is a busy friendly little restaurant. The place is worth a try if you are not craving clam chowder. The halibut, shrimp, and fries were good. The clam chowder, however, was like eating bland gravy. Overall a good visit and the price was appropriate.

    (3)
  • Barry T.

I will say that the halibut was excellent. It was lightly breaded and cooked perfectly. I had mine served with generic curly fries. Someone else in our party had the salt & pepper chips with their order and they were excellent. The clam chowder had an excellent base but lacked in clams. The cole slaw was too lightly dressed and like the curly fries was generic. I don't know if they think that the lack of service adds to atmosphere but it does not. Smile and acknowledge your customer, it would help. I couldn't see the kitchen, but through the swinging door to the kitchen I could see a very dirty floor. Oh, and they have no alcohol. I fail to see what makes this place get four stars and above. I found it to be overrated. This is just fish & chips we are talking about. Go to a cleaner restaurant with nicer service and be able to enjoy a beer with your meal.

Having seen the reviews we stopped in and gave it a try. It's good to do one thing and do it well and that is J's. Awesome fish and chips done well!

YUMMY!! This place is fabulous!! We came here after having a disappointing experience at another seafood restaurant in this area so we asked a local and this place came highly recommended and boy it didn't disappoint, he did say it would be crowded and now we know why. Upon arriving you are instructed by a small sign to place your order at the counter and in as a table comes available you can have it to eat your meal. OK!! Well luckily we were there at 1:30 and it wasn't too busy so we immediately got a table. My husband ordered the special of Cod and Chips and a bowl of Clam Chowder and I just ordered a bowl of Clam Chowder. The Clam Chowder was thick and full bodied with a nice amount of clams and potatoes, the portion was good size. My husbands Cod and Chips were amazing if I say so as I snuck a bite or three. The breading was light and flaky and the fish was not frozen from what we could tell. The fries were very tasty, but the cole slaw was yet to be desired as it was very tart as the tarter sauce. But the fish did not need tarter sauce it was that good!! After you are done eating you bus your own table. This is a must try place in Lincoln City!!

The best halibut I've had in a long time. My son said they made the best fish tacos he's ever had.

The food? Delicious! I would usually choose J's over any other sea food on the Oregon Coast. Unfortunately, I just had the saddest most awkward experience with customer service, which is not good for a small business. I walked in five minutes to close, and it was so extremely evident that my business was not wanted. Here's a tip, if you don't want any more customers, and you own your own business... Turn off the open sign! I'm so disappointed.

Perfect fish and chips! Tasty! Light n crispy. Thanks! Took a while to get our food but the quality was so obvious. Compliments to the chef. I wish the store was bigger - more seating would be nice.

Campy roadside fish and chips place. The people are very attentive and friendly. The food was well cooked, ample and delicious! This is not a fine dining place but if you want delicious fish and chips with fresh local fish from the Pacific Northwest, you should give them a try.

I was there for a week in July and I checked Yelp saw all the good reviews so I had to check it out. Is a very small and busy place. The food was good. Reasonably priced. There can be a wait but is worth it. Weekday lunch specials make it even more appealing. Worth checking out if you have never been. Next time I'm in town I will be stopping by.

My wife picked out J's and she had a great pick. This place is right off the highway, with really easy parking. We just so happen to get there about 10 minutes before the place opened, and I recommend you do the same. There's very limited seating inside and you have to order first before you sit. My wife and I both had the cod, it tasted so fresh, but it was just a little too greasy. And I do mean, just a little. The chowder was so good, but again, just a little too greasy. And I do mean just a little. My recommendation, if you're outside your 20s, don't come here if you drank the night before. I feel that the food was almost at four stars, but there was not enough seating for me to justify a four-star rating. But keep in mind, those are my only two complaints. I have nothing else but good things to say about this place.

From other reviews we had expected to be offended by rude service; yes, there are signs posted but giving the benefit of the doubt, they've probably had to put so many signs up because of a few rude and thoughtless customers that ruin it for everyone. As for the long wait, we went at 11:30 when they opened and had a table and our food quickly. Halibut fish and chips were best ever and they don't skimp on their portions. We will definitely go there again and will keep in mind to go when it's not their busy time of day.

well as you can see by the reviews this place is off the hook. very simple but the most wonderful food you can eat. hands down probably the best fish and chips in the state of Oregon. that's a very broad statement but I'll stand by it. in the summertime the lines are out the door and people are just waiting to get the great stuff there. if you're truly a connoisseur of fish and chips you can't miss this place. I'm retired corporate chef worldwide I say this place is it. it's the only place to go for really find fish and chips where you can walk out the door and be happy on and on.

I can't decide if I think this is 2 stars or 3 but I'm feeling generous so I will go with 3. The handwritten signs of rules and nonsense is way too much for me! I get it. You want me to throw away my trash, don't stay too long and wipe my own ass. Uhhhh hellllooooo I think you probably also want my money. If you do at least open up this little device called a Computer and type up the signs to class up the joint!! I don't eat under water creatures usually but I thought I might as well join 'em since I was in Lincoln City. I ordered the Cod Fish & Chips. It tasted like nothing really. It was scalding hot! I mean I like my fried food nice and hot but this ish was scalding for probably 37 minutes! The fries and fish tasted exactly the same. I think maybe I don't understand the hype of Fish and Chips.

First time trying this place while staying in Lincoln City. When we got there the line was a little long and the wait time was supposed to be 45-60 min even though we were served within the 30 min. I wondered why that place was always so busy and packed "Because it's the BEST"! I tried the Cod Basket with curly fries mmmmm..... My wife had the Fish Tacos and really loves them also. Very cozy atmosphere and great food. Definitely returning every time we drive by!

The BEST fish and chips in town hands down. The rest of the menu is yummy as well. Only downside is that it's a very small place. We usually order to go because of this. Seating is limited and the food takes a while to prepare, usually because they are slamming busy!

Had lunch here. Food was good; but atmosphere was not warm. Too many signs with inane rules every where. The person taking orders was not very friendly. Probably better to take food to go, if you are wanting ambiance while you dine.

A touch of Nazi-ism in Lincoln City. We phoned-in our order for pickup and arrived 45 minutes later (which is when we were told our order would be ready). We arrived w/our son who is a very sweet, quiet, mellow toddler. . Since only 2 tables were occupied, we asked if we could eat our food at the restaurant. The woman at the counter said "no" since we called-in our order. Since the place was pretty much empty we asked if we could stay. The woman said, "No, those are the rules." Note, this place doesn't take reservations, so it's not like we were getting in the way of anyone's plans. I pointed to my son, hoping she'd understand that when traveling w/a small child, a change of plans often occurs . But the woman at the counter just shook her head and said, "No, those are the rules." My husband asked if we could pay extra just so we could sit and have our meal, but the woman stuck to her following orders line, which reminded me of the response that nazi officers would use to explain their behavior, "We were just following orders". When you don't have a shred of decency to be kind to people - - when you can't bend a nonsensical rule because you Must Follow Orders - - then you are taking your 1st baby steps towards other gross, unkind behavior. Heartless. I mentioned something about the nazi-like approach and the woman said we could cancel our order (which still wasn't ready). So we did. Because I've got principles, heart, and put my $$$ where my mouth is. If you can't treat customers w/kindness and logic, then your food isn't going to taste good. Please Note - after having a meal elsewhere we drove by around 45 minutes later, en route to our lodgings, and noticed that was place was still empty. Unreal. We are now spreading the word to family and friends about J's poor customer service and self-sabotaging adherence to illogical rules.

This hidden gem in Lincoln City should be on your short list for a bowl of chowder or fish and chips. The fish is fresh, chowder very tasty, and service is prompt. They stay busy however, so show up early!

Have been going to Mos chowder for years but read recent reviews and they weren't so good these days. Decided to try J's fish and chips just down the road. Fabulous! Had special offerings of rock cod and ling cod for the fish as well as halibut and cod. We had the ling and rock fish and they were both wonderful. $9 for more than we could eat. We will definitely make this our fish and chips stop!!!

The food was good...the service is very poor. Not only are people skills lacking with staff, the signs littered throughout the establishment about "To Go is To Go", "Don't Move Tables" "No free refills" It all seems very petty and speaks louder about the type of people who run it than the food they serve. The kitchen looks dirty and the prices are fairly high. Unfortunately, there aren't many options in Lincoln City for straight fish and chips without going to a more traditional restaurant. If you can get over their poor service and their petty signs the food is ok...just expect to pay a high price and don't expect to get a refill on your drink.

4 1/2 stars -- really. [I have since amended this review and upped the rating to 5 stars because they are so perfectly consistent as the very best fish and chips on the coast....] So I've lived here on the Oregon Coast a total of 10 weeks now -- and I'm pretty much eating fish & chips and clam chowder at every cafe and dive in a 25 square-mile area. Blame of on a life lived surrounded by dusty dry farmland, over-heated city concrete, and drought. I haven't hit the saturation point yet, and it's nowhere in sight. I almost passed this place by -- because it looks a little grungy on the outside. But inside -- mmmmm. No question. It's the best fish and chips I've had so far. 5-star halibut fish and chips. Flat out. 5-star cod fish and chips. Mmmmmm. 8-star tartar sauce -- the best I've had anywhere. Ever. 1-star cole slaw. (don't bother.) Just flat. 5-star fries (we got the regular fries and husband says they are the best he's had so far -- but we saw they also do curl-fries and home-made chips...) 3-star clam chowder. Great thick cream soup-i-ness, but not many clams or potatoes -- and the potatoes weren't quite tender. If you get there between 11:30am and 1:30pm M-F -- at least during the winter / off-season -- they have a lunch special of 2 pieces of the cod, plus either fries or clam chowder and a drink for just $6 -- which I'm guessing is what we go back for in the near. This place has my vote. *note -- they do take credit cards, but they charge 25 cents for that -- which makes sense considering how much the banks tend to bleed small businesses in this "service." And I don't mind paying cash and denying the banks their drop of blood, anyway!

Usually fish and chips are quite greasy and leave you with that dull grease flavor at the end. J's did not. I had the halibut and it had all of the flavor, all of the texture, but none of the grease. As far as the sides go, the curly fries ar egreatm but the regular fries are fairly bland. Also, I did not think much of the chowder. It tasted like country gravy with the occasional potato chunk in it The place may feel a bit diey and could tkae a while to be served (they do all orders, including call ins, chronologically) but the fish and chips and well worth it.

J's is the BOMB! I have been here many times and have not been disappointed yet. My favorite is their 4 piece platter because you get to try a variety of fish. Also make sure you order their homemade salt and pepper chips instead of the regular fries, you will not regret those crispy buggers! One last side note... I am an avid hater of coleslaw but let me tell you, J's coleslaw is freakin awesome! If you are in the Lincoln city area you don't want to skip this gem!

I was looking for a cheap place to have lunch and get decent fish and chips. Our favorite place, former Captain Ron's now Dory Covey changed their prices along with the name and I can't make myself pay $20 bucks for cod fish and chips for lunch. So we tried J's because of the reviews and weren't disappointed. Missed the $6 lunch (11:30-1:00) but tried the Halibut bite Special for $9. The bites were not small and 15-20 were more than the 3-piece plate. Can you say FILLING? Plus you had choice of three types of fries. I went with my favorite Curly fries. The halibut was cooked just right, and they use fresh fish. The bites were at least as large as regular pieces I've had elsewhere, We didn't have the chowder, but that's okay, there's some other menu items I need to try before I go home so I'll get some chowder. If you are looking for ambiance keep on looking. The clerk/waitress is old school no nonsense type who will make sure you get your order, but tipping is optional in a jar on the counter. It's a small joint. Overheard: "How's the chowder? "It's made!." Note: We went to Mo's the night before for Halibut and chips--completely uninspired. Fish overcooked, stringy french fries from frozen package, Chowder was decent. Mo's is living off their reputation and anyone who's eaten there knows that. Save yourself some $$ and eat better at J's.

We came here twice in our short stay at Lincoln City because I couldn't get enough of the clam chowder! The first time we ordered fish and chips which was perfectly cooked. The second visit we ordered fish tacos which were equally delicious!! They have this fish and chips thing NAILED!! But don't forget about the clam chowder too! :-) Only downfall is because they are so amazing, it gets really crowded fast!! Small price to pay for great seafood!

Delicious!! Got the fish and chips and chowder with sides of chips, curly fries, and fries! The fish came out perfectly hot and steamy with a crunch panko crust. Small place with little seating but make sure to stop and try it out. Look for the red sign driving by-because we passed it at first. So delicious we were still talking about it in the car ride home. Definitely stop by here if you are driving up the coast.

I love this place! So many places that fry food use old oil that makes everything taste icky. Not J's. The fry oil is fresh and the food flavor comes through deliciously. Be sure to try the salt and pepper chips. Everything I have ordered has been great!

Probably wouldn't go back; disappointing as I've wanted to try this place for a long time now. My family of four gave it a try on a Tuesday night last week. This place should really almost be take-out only; it's that small and cramped. There was seating for maybe 15 people at most. No place to even comfortably stand and read the menu board. I'd be willing to overlook that though if everything else was stellar. We had the combo: halibut, cod and shrimp. The coating is great, that's why they get two stars. The clam chowder had very little clam or potato in it - I'm shocked how many folks think this is the best they've had - they should get out more, try Dooger's in Seaside...gold standard. The flavor was good, but it was mostly just thick broth with very little clam or potato. Tarter sauce and coleslaw was meh, forgettable. They don't bus tables here and apparently don't care to offer a soda refill either. We had our chowder cups teetering on the side of the table and even as the cashier cleaned tables around us she never took our dirty cups. 4 of us were crammed into a table for 2, there wasn't much room to work with. We would have gotten up to request our own refill, but it was so cramped in here we opted to just forego refills. Unfortunately, there isn't much competition in Lincoln City for good, affordable fish n' chips. I recommend you get take out if you must choose J's and skip the chowder.

Fantastic Fish and Chips!! It's been a few years since I had fish and chips, and I knew we would find some on this beach trip. We got here at 11:25am, 5 minutes before the placed opened on a Monday. We waited in the parking lot for the doors to open so we could eat and jam out of town. I figured this would save us some time getting here right when they opened. With that being said, do you have any idea how many other people were thinking the same thing? J's has doors on the north and south side of the building, so when I walked in once the doors opened, there was already a deep line. I'm not complaining at all, I was simply shocked! J's is a bit short on seating, it's a small fish and chips shack, but they do the food right. I opted for the Cod and Fries. The Cod was extremely fresh tasting. The Panko coating on the outside is my favorite, I think it helps the fish stand out a bit more also which is a major bonus with fresh fish. The tartar sauce was awesome as well, I have a bad habit of dipping my fries in tartar sauce...so good. It was 8 or 9 bucks for the basket, which is more than fair when you consider portion size and quality. Next time I'll be going back for the Halibut!

A hole in the wall dive-y place with fantastic fish and chips, and more importantly great people. The staff can be gruff, but I left my bag at the restaurant (hanging on my chair). They immediately noticed it and kept it safe for me. Had a ton of cash, electronics, credit cards, etc. in there, and no one touched a thing, and were very understanding and friendly when I came to pick it up.

Would give five stars but the service was abrupt - almost rude. The cashier made a negative comment about same sex marriages and then when someone eating mentioned that his clam chowder tasted odd, she just said that different people like different things. No offer to fix it or replace it. Tried to call earlier in the day because no closing time is listed, but they didn't answer - stopped by early in the day and were told six, but arrived at five twenty or so and were the last ones served. One other man came in to order after we were seated and was told no because they had too many to go orders. All that being said, this place absolutely has the best fish and chips I may have ever had. Tried the clam strips too and they were fantastic! Didn't feel greasy or oily at all. I would dock two stars for the service, but the excellent food made up one for sure!! Go here and eat - just don't expect great service.

I had the 3 piece halibut with the fresh salt and pepper potato chips with cole slaw and a cup of chowder. Everything was excellent and I do think the best chowder you can find at the beach. Follow the rules when you get in there ;).

I very much enjoyed this small family business for lunch. It is basic fried fish but it's fresh and delicious. Had the four piece combo. Highly recommend. The halibut was wonderful and the shrimp is big and fresh. Cheap. Fast. Delicious.

Spent considerable amount of time researching where we could get the best possible fish and chips in Lincoln City - we wanted drive-worthy fish and chips since we were road-tripping for an hour. We chose J's due to the numerous positive reviews and the appeal of fresh fish. We were not disappointed! The fish (the four of us chose the 10-piece halibut family meal) was delicate and moist and the breading was crunchy and delicious and well-seasoned. The tartar sauce was clearly home-made. The woman running the show (owner?) was friendly and calm in the face of the storm that was a packed house. So, yes, there are a lot of signs directing you to do this or that or not do this or that. But when I think about the fact that it's run by a single person up front and a single cook - it simplifies things. I, for one, was glad for direction on what to do upon entering as it was PACKED and I wasn't sure what protocol was. We opted to wait for a table (there are only 7 in the place) and we stood for 30 minutes at 2:00 on a Thursday afternoon. It was WORTH it. The food was delish. Some of the best fish and chips I've ever had, and that's saying something. Big thumbs up. BTW - the guy in line behind us said that he's driven 160 miles before to get these fish and chips when the craving hits. I could totally see that.

Saw that it was highly ranked in LIncoln City, went in, the cashier/waitress told us that it'd be a 45 minute-ish wait, but we decided to stick it out and wait. We ordered the 10 pc halibut family pack w/curly fries and coleslaw. We actually had to wait a freaking hour to get our food. I guess that's what you get for fresh fish and chips... The blonde cashier/waitress seemed friendly from what I saw even though it was packed inside the restaurant and people kept on coming in. She also asked us if we wanted nugget sized portions or regular-sized, she said there would be a lot more food if we took the nuggets, so I agreed. Guess that's how they get rid of the scraps. Limited seating and space inside was annoying, and they should probably put in some more effort at wiping down tables since it looks like they used a ratty rag to clean. We took our food to-go and it was pretty good. The way they battered and fried the fish was tasty, and you could tell it was fresh. Curly fries and coleslaw were mediocre. Not the greatest deal, and not really worth the wait when we could've gotten the same thing else where quicker.

Stopped in to try the fish & chips, and was basically told by staff don't bother coming in because orders were going to take more than 40 min and we were 12th in line. Should have guessed by all the rule signs on the windows and doors, "to go is to go". In other words take your food and get out! To go orders are not allowed to leave trash. Do not move tables, and so on... Should have read reviews first. We went some where else.

Wanted to try a new place to us while in Lincoln City and came across J's on Yelp. We love hole in the wall local favorites so this was, from reading other reviews, right up our alley. Admittedly the salt and pepper chips were the saving grace that accompanied the fish n chips. They were crisp, warm and not greasy! Fish was served with the chips, coleslaw, wedge of lemon and of course - fish. Texture and flakiness of the fish was fine but the batter was lacking. If you're familiar with the Japanese batter, Panko, this is what you will get @ J's. If you're not familiar with Panko, you will probably rate this some of the top fish n chips. Coleslaw was dry and flavorless. Quaint facility with minimal seating (see below). The ginger at the counter that took our order was LESS than friendly. Unfortunately, since you order and pay before you eat I left a fairly generous gratuity, on the woman's surly attitude alone, I wished I could have asked for change back. We tried something new; weren't impressed and won't be back. If I want (less than) mediocre fish and chips and to be treated gruffly, I will find a Skippers or Long John Silvers (blah!) with a drive thru and have some irritated teen take my order. * side note, overheard other diner ask for cocktail sauce (if you know the place you would understand overhearing is something that is unavoidable due to restaurant having only 7 or 8 tables, it is very quaint), the ginger sounded irritated, made the woman repeat herself and then sounding indigent responded stating if you want cocktail sauce it's 25 cents - so my tip: if you want cocktail instead of tartar sauce let her know when you order and save yourself 25 cents! Though maybe their cocktail outshines the so-so tartar sauce.

In town for a week. Had a cup of chowder and the combo, which included a piece of cod, a piece of halibut and two plump shrimp, with crinkle fries and slaw. The fish was fresh, moist and tender. The batter was light and not greasy. The portion size was perfect for me. The fries were crisp. The slaw was crisp and lightly dressed. The chowder was creamy with a touch of heat. Delicious but not much clam or potato. Hope I can get there again before I leave.

We took a trip to the beach and wanted to try a new place since we go to Mo's every time we're in Lincoln City. At J's we tried the shrimp dinner that included fries and coleslaw. We also decided to order a small cup of clam chowder to try. The shrimp was amazing, the fries were good but the coleslaw and clam chowder were so bad that I couldn't finish them. The coleslaw was bland and the clam chowder tasted too peppery.

I really enjoyed this fish and chip place. The food was fabulous, and we received our food quickly. Although we didn't go at peak lunch time hours. From what I hear it may be a better choice to avoid busy hours here. That is if you want a quick meal.

Came here for a light dinner before heading to camp. Wished we got here a little earlier. They ran out of clam chowder. Anyway ordered the 4 piece combo which included cod, halibut, fries, and something else. The food was tasty but I have had better. Still wished they had clam chowder to try. Oh well.

Great little place that makes a lot of their own stuff. Also a small selection of fresh bakery products. Right off the highway, rather small, clean, and easy parking. Met the owners...very nice people. Run by family members. Order was as follows.. 4 piece combo- $8.50 includes choice of home made potato chips, or curly fries, or regular fries. Slaw included. Cod was good, Halibut was great, shrimp were awesome. Drink included. Fish tacos-$5.00 included warm tortilla chips and slaw. Pretty good. Fish cooked perfect. Cam Chowder (cup) $2.00 Tender clams, soup VERY creamy, no sand or grit, average amount of potato and clams. Soup was not very hot but tasted good. The breading on the fish is as everyone else says in other reviews. Light and crispy...not too much. I would prefer all fish were breaded this way. It was great. There are 7 tables and if its busy you will have to get it to go. We were there Friday afternoon around 4:30 and all the tables filled within 20 minutes. Lots of locals coming and going. Seems to have good reputation. Definitely would go back.

The food alone gets 5 stars. But: - The wait was very long (45 minutes) to get our clam chowder and fish and chips. - They ran out of clam chowder and had to turn down many customers. - They have poor seating and the building could use a little bit of a renovation. - You have to get a key to use the restroom behind the building. - The portions are a little small for what you are paying. That being said, it's still a solid 4/5.

This place ROCKS the fish and chips! The atmosphere is a little fast foodie but the service is incredible (super personable workers/owner more than willing to chat it up with customers) and the food is fry-tastic (it is fish and chips, after all!). On top of the incredible fish, fries, and chowder--they make homemade potato chips that are delish and made to order. The prices are reasonable (downright cheap). This place is a definite must stop on our annual Oregon coast adventure.

Best fish and chips in Lincoln City. Odd hours but the food and prices are over the top.

Whenever we go to the Oregon coast, we indefinately try to eat some fresh seafood and I'm always disappointed by the selection, quality or price. Not anymore - J's Fish and Chips hits on all 3 cylinders! We arrived starving and were immediately greated and consulted on our menu choices. All 3 of us ordered the 4 piece combo with shrimp, halibut and cod served with your choice of sides (traditional french fries, curly fries and homemade potato chips). Their batter is light and textured, truely amazing! My first round of chips came out a little soggy and they offered to refire them without me even asking. Definately go with the homemade chips - they are delicious! We also sampled their chower which was favorful. J's Fish and Chips is now a destination whenever we head to the beach!

Update to my original review - I don't know why the owner didn't post this for everyone to read, but I'm sure he'd want people to know how he felt about my review... Here is his response (emailed to me through yelp) - "I remember you clearly. Your poor attitude and review is obviously a result of the lack of you ASKING for the correct sauce...99.9% of our customers request tartar...you were the exception. If this is any refection of your mannerisms...please dine elsewhere." He didn't bother to comment on my acknowledgment for his wonderful cod, the rotten potato chip, the chair I was sitting on that felt like it would collapse any minute, the hostile signage or the subpar coconut shrimp...all of which were NOT a result of my preference for cocktail sauce. For the 0.1% of diners out there who want cocktail sauce - beware!! Ask for it before you pay for your order, they will not ask you what you prefer, and you will be financially responsible should you request it once your food order arrives. Have your .25 cents ready and enjoy your meal, you will not be welcome to dine in their fine establishment if you attempt to reason with them! Bottom line - I don't have an issue with paying someone .25 cents, which I did pay btw, even though it didn't say anywhere on the menu that the fish and chips automatically come with tartar sauce. My issue was with the hostile attitude that came from both the woman behind the counter and the cook (who I think was an owner)...all for POLITELY asking for a little cocktail sauce and questioning why it wasn't stated anywhere on the menu if it always came with tartar sauce. I wouldn't return to this dump if someone paid me. I don't care how good the cod was - I don't dine in restaurants where I'm treated like dirt.

Without the help of Yelp, I think I would have just zoomed past J's! This place is tiny, but busy! The 1 lady working the counter was working hard, ordering, delivering food, and clearing tables! yeah, girl...hard work is paying off! Shared fish and chips and a bowl of chowder with my mom. Pops had a bowl of chowder and we loved it all!!! I had to take away a star b/c I thought it could be slightly cleaner. She wiped down our table and threw all the crumbs on the ground.....would think she would wipe it into her hand and toss it?? weird? no? am I weird for thinking like that? well - whatever. You want good chowder and fish?? Go to J's!

Food was good...definitely a fish and chips place! Wish there were more beverage options (other than soda, water or unsweetened tea) - mainly for kids (i.e. milk and/or juice). Both my husband and I had the halibut fish & chips. I had the house-made salt & pepper potato chips and my husband had curly fries. Both kids had their "Little Mates" meal which had a single fish served over fries. The halibut was softer and tastier than the kids fish, but both were excellent. The batter has almost a panko-type crust. Crunchy and wonderful. Great fish & chips experience.

Five star fish shrimp and decent slaw too. Minus for curly fries, bland tartar sauce and very weak ice tea.

Excellent Fish & Chips shop. Also, quite an experience. It was our first time. We picked it because there were a lot of cars parked outside. The Good: Good price, Great fish, Great value. The Bad: Limited seating. The Other: Interesting idea, order at counter, when your order is ready, first available table is yours. I didn't like standing and waiting for the order to arrive, but it worked well and tables were available when our order was finally ready. Due to the discomfort of standing, the time dragged on as we waited for our food. Just figure 20 minutes from the time you walk through the door until you see your food. Not sure if it's good for groups, as the seating arrangement is unpredictable. My opinion: It seems like a nice family restaurant, things could be more efficient, but the service was friendly and personal. They bent over backwards to ensure that we enjoyed our meal. I wouldn't recommend it if you're impatient or in a rush. I would recommend it if you want to save a couple bucks and have some good food. We'll be back.

Stopped in here while vacationing in Lincoln City. I read the yelp reviews so figured I would give it a shot. The food was amazing! - The lady taking the orders and bringing the food out to the tables could really use a lesson in smiling though. She gave a very unapproachable vibe out and seemed annoyed that we even existed in HER restaurant. I would hesitate coming back just based off the lack of customer service. A word of advice! - Don't make the customer feel like your doing them a favor by taking their money. Food is awesome though!

Yumtown, USA! Awesome chowder and deelish fish tacos. And did I mention HOMEMADE SALT & PEPPER CHIPS! Like chip chips, not french fried chips. Tends to get a little busy, so there may be a wait during lunch and dinner. Getting there tip: This listing has J's in "SE" Highway 101, but it's actually "SW". I submitted the change, but that's an FYI just in case. The "SE" address is actually a very nice gift shop that gets more questions about the fish & chips joint than anything else.

This place requires a break down of star power! Here it goes: FOOD: 5 STARS!!! Get the seasoned fries, won't be disappointed! Breading was perfecto! Price more than reasonable, for two fish/chip baskets and two bowls of chowder less than $25 drinks included! LAYOUT: 4 STARS Cozy, comfortable. Gas station-esq bathroom (key required on rear of building) not so awesome. But reasonably clean. Ps don't put the cheap pink soap in the gold dial antibacterial bottle, I know you're cheaping!! SERVICE: 3 STARS Friendly and quick enough but lady behind counter had creepy smile a la soundgardens black hole sun video. A little unsettling. Hence 4 star v 5 star review. If you're looking for some quick tasty fish and chips this place is decidedly magical, on many levels.

No restaurant is all bad or all good. J's is a prime example. When we driving out of town south towards Depoe Bay, my partner caught sight of a homemade sign in front of J's touting their homemade clam chowder. So of course, we had to stop and try the chowder. The fish (cod, I think) in the fish & chips was truly wonderful. The breading was delicate and flavorful. The fish itself was tender and moist. Really really good. Now, the chowder is another story. It really was nothing more than scalded milk that tasted like flour and contained next to no clams or potatoes. And J's has the audacity to boast about their chowder!

Hands-down the best fish & chips in Lincoln City. Okay, want more details? It's a tiny joint and you'll probably go right past it if you're not looking for it, but you'll be missing out if you pass it by. The prices are good and you get a pretty decent portion size - I always get the 3-piece cod with curly fries and I'm usually too full of delicious greasy fish to finish the fries. Get take-out for lunch and park your tush on the sand for the best beach meal ever.

This is a quaint local place. I'm glad to have found this on yelp. It is a small place that appears to really cater to locals which in this case means you are getting a pretty good deal. It has a small menu. I had the cod basket and a cup of clam chowder. It was made to order, fresh and delicious. I believe they make an effort to support the local fishermen and I was glad to help them. The prices are great for the coast. $10 got me a 3 piece basket, a drink and a cup of chowder. I'm picky with my chowder and I'm happy to say that this one exceeded my hopes for flavor. Just a touch much pepper in this batch and it could have used a few more potatoes, nut as far as flavor, really can't be beat. I'd come back for a bowl anytime.

The BEST fried fish ever! Super light and crispy crust and moist cod...not oily at all which means they deep fried it at a hot enough temp. Place is small with no frills but the food is why you go, right? Normal fries are not all that good (they are like the frozen fries you buy in the store and put in the oven) so get the curly fries since they are at least crispy. For $25 you get the family basket with 10 pieces large cod, bowl of Cole slaw, basket of fries, and 4 large drinks. Perfect for family of 4 and actually just a bit more than we could eat! Go! You won't be sorry! If they had kick butt fries, this place would be 5 stars.

Yum. Tried this for dinner tonight and WOW! Fish and chips were delicious! I ordered the halibut basket with their homemade chips and my husband ordered the combo basket. We were impressed with the quality and quantity of food. Will definitely be back! Took off a star for cleanliness but it won't stop us from visiting again.

Had fish tacos and slaw today and was great. I gave three stars because of all the signs posted they will charge you five dollars if you bring your outside trash into restaurant to throw away made for a somewhat hostile environment. The young lady that served up our food gave it to the wrong couple sitting next to us and was very unfriendly as it would break her face if she smiled. Food is great but service and atmosphere is subpar.

  • Terry R.

Stopped by for dinner. Grabbed the Halibut Fish & Chips with a cup of chowder to go. The Halibut was breaded nicely & had a little crunch to it while the fish was moist & flaky. The salt & pepper chips were good and the chowder was very good but didn't have much in it as far as pieces of potato or clams. It was very tasty and creamy. Definitely will stop again.

I found J's Fish and Chips on Yelp while visiting the coast with my oldest and dearest friends from back home. There was a fairly large group of us that decided to treck into town for some lunch and I could tell right away that J's was not ready for us. The establishment is very small (like 8 tables total).....luckily there was an outside picnic table that we overthrew. Everyone decided to order that baskets of cod fish and chips and most everyone tried the clam chowder too. Everything was absolutely delicious and total worth the long wait for our enormous order. The fish was cooked perfectly, the batter was crisp, and the chips were nice and crunchy. There chowder was also very thick and had a nice but subtle clam taste. I would recommend J's to anyone heading into or by Lincoln City....simply delicious.

Great Fish and Chips! My husband loves fish and chips and he says that this is maybe the best he has ever had. The fish was fresh, battered just the right amount and was freshly prepared. Hot till the last bite too! They were really busy on the low season day we went so they were out of chowder and it took a little while for the food to get out, but don't let this keep you from going. The service was great! My husband even wants to go back before we leave town it was so good. Highly recommend this one.

  • Sandra F.

I'm not a big deep fried food fan. That said, I recommend this place. I usually pull off all the breading but didn't here. It was crisp and not too heavy. I had the halibut and home made chips and both were excellent. At my request they decreased the amount of seasoning. The chips came out hot and crunchy. Eat them first! I went mid- week and there was no waiting. The restaurant itself looked clean and I didn't see any offensive signage.

Went a few weeks ago with the in-laws. The place is very, very small but worth the wait for a table. Like the name says, it's a fried food haven. Don't go if you're hoping to find some kind of grilled alternative. Excellent cod, very tasty fish tacos, crispy coleslaw and a delightful family running the place.

  • Rob H.

This is one of those places you wouldn't go unless you were looking for it. If you're not looking for it, you should be. It is not flashy or centrally located to town. A Small place, with smaller dining room (Five 2-person, and Two 4-person tables (seating 18 max). Windows on 3 sides, on east side of Hwy 101. Menu is assorted items including family packs with side & drinks for four people $25(cod or shrimp) $35 halibut. Chowder $2.50-$4.00. We had shrimp, halibut, clams, fries and homemade slaw...all excellent. We'll be back! Time took approximately 25 minutes for food to arrive (eating time will vary with your own group), but when it did, it was steaming hot. Very much made to order, and well made at that!

  • Christopher L.

This place is amazing! We were very glad we went. They have a wide variety of fish (I.e, we tried a mako shark & chips plate). The halibut was especially delicious. They have a bread crumb-like batter they use which makes everything very non-greasy like so many other fish & chips recipes. Make sure to try their house special salt & pepper chips. Very good. If u go as a family make sure you take a look @ their family meal option. We didn't notice it until we had already ordered but could have save a few bucks if we had.

This friendly little chip shop (are we yanks allowed to use that term, oh well, i'm borrowing it) is a great place to get your fried seafood craving fixed. While I like South Beach Fish Market better, this is certainly an option if you are a little further north. They have lots of great fresh seafood and sometimes they even sport a variety of fried potatoes to choose from: home fries, curly fries, or traditional. The iced tea is unsweetened, something I appreciate. Specials are always welcome here. Last time I was in, I was heading for my trademark Halibut when the waitress pointed me to the "Halibut Bites" special. Indeed, she was correct. I save a few bucks and got my Halibut fix. Well done J's Fish and Chips; all around!

  • Rachael M.

I would have given this place 5 stars but I didn't due to the amount of time we had to wait. (Not because they were slow, but because they were so busy the whole time we were there, I guess that's pretty common) I will definitely stop at this place when I am in Lincoln City again, it was so YUMMY! It looks like a little hole in the wall place that you wouldn't want to step foot in, but it is worth it!

A quaint operation they have going at this place in Lincoln City. I came here with my cousin on the 4th and we both were very happy decided to end up here for lunch after an morning surfing. The chips were homemade and were really good. They were unsalted but really tasty. Take it from me, I hate potato chips but these really surprised me. The fried fish and shrimp were stupendously breaded and cooked to perfection. The only drawbacks were the meager portions and the coleslaw was something I wish I rather had not even tried. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone fortunate enough to make it to Lincoln City!

This the 3rd time my husband and I visited J's Fish and Chips while vacationing on the Oregon Coast. The food is phenomenal, always fresh, and honestly the best seafood by far on the coast. This time we had the halibut fish and chips, bowl of chowder, and fish tacos. All three items were superb and for how busy this place was, our food arrived quickly. J's has needed a bigger place for some time but even if they stay in the same building, they will be the only place we stop for seafood. Highly recommend!

  • James H.

Possibly the best fried fish I've had in my life. I had the Halibut platter. The Halibut itself was perfect, definitely never deep frozen, with all the full flavor associated with a very fresh piece of fish. J's shines with its batter/crust though. Much less heavy than most fried fish places do their batter, but with an amazing amount of crunch that makes each bite so satisfying. Seriously out of this world fish and chips. We are eating at Beck's restaurant tonight which has 5 yelp stars and 3 or 4 $ signs, but I just can't imagine how I'm going to get a better meal than the one I had last night at J's. Highly recommended.

Stopped here while I was in Oregon for my 10yr HS reunion after seeing the 4 stars on Yelp, and oh boy was it ever right :) Everything was perfectly cooked and tasted amazing - the cod, halibut, and their special at the time, lingcod (which I'd never heard of before, but was a local fresh fish). Even the clam chowder was great. I can not recommend this place enough :)

This place is fantastic! Best fish and chips we ever had. After a long drive up the coast, a hankering for clam chowder and seafood starts to creep in, and this place does not disappoint.

This review is only for the fish and chips, and the great staff at J's. I've only been there once, and am not qualified to comment beyond that. And it was good... This was my first trip to Lincoln City, and I couldn't find the place. So I called them. The woman who answered was awsome, she acknolwdged that I had no idea where I was in relation to her, and sucessfully gave me directions (via landmarks) to their restaurant. This is a feat which would have stumped many, and I thank you. The fish and chips turned out to be exactly what I was craving. Large chunks of shrimp, halibut, and cod perfectly breaded and fried. No sub-grade fish here- every bite was perfect beautiful fish. They make their chips in house, and laughingly offer you the alternative of frozen ones(if that is your desire). If I ever pass through this section of the coast again, J's will be part of the plan.

I almost feel guilty for writing the review, even though 150 already have, so that the wait times do not increase any more! The first thing out of the server behind the counter's mouth was that there would be a 35 minute wait for food. Seeing as though I found out this was not out of the ordinary, we were prepared to wait for it. I ordered the three piece halibut and my wife the three piece cod and split a bowl of the chowder. They lost a star due to the chowder, unfortunately. It was good, there was just a severe lack of any "chunkiness" that should be found in chowder. No potatoes, not even a chunk of clam. However, when our fish and chips landed at our table, any negative thoughts vanished as we bit into what can only be described as heavenly fish. I don't know if they sold their soul to the devil himself in order to perfectly fry the fish in the batter whose recipe must have come straight from God's lips himself. I'm not sure why the food takes so long to come out, one order at a time, but frankly I don't care. This will be on the "every time we're at the beach" list.

Halibut Fish and Chips with Coleslaw and Tartar Sauce Halibut Fish ~ Very fresh fish and light flakey batter rapped around the fish oh so gently. Get This Freedom fries ~ Lacked seasoning and texture (Cooking oil not hot enough) Coleslaw ~ Lacked flavor, not enough black pepper Tartar sauce ~ Not sure if it's contracted out or made in house, but it needed garlic and seasoning. All and All Fish was great ! Everything else I tasted was mediocre.

45 minutes for 2 pieces of cod and a cup of chowder to go? Really? After 20 minutes of waiting, I overheard the cashier telling customers it would be around 30 minutes for their food to be ready. That's when I started watching the cook, who apparently was one of the owners, since I recognized him from some of the photographs of fishing trips on the walls. The cook was dropping one order at a time and then waiting until that order was finished before he even looked at the next ticket. Who does that? My very first job was working in a fish-n-chips place, and as a teenager I knew that you could look at the ten tickets lined up and see that if 6 of them had fish, you could drop that much fish in the fryer. And this place has more rules than Seinfeld's Soup Nazi, posted in crappy handwritten signs all over the place. Just try and sit down at a table after you finally receive your food if you ordered it to go. Even if there's a space with your friends who were already sitting there. I dare you. The fish and chowder were very good, but not worth a 45-minute wait. You can drive 30 minutes south to Newport and get better fish at the South Beach Market.

  • Allen L.

We had the 10 piece halibut, 2 bowls of clam chowder, and the fried clam strips. Everything fried, down to the French fries were great. Perfect amount of batter and not overly greasy. Throw some hot sauce in with your tarter sauce and you are good to go (I'd pass on the clam chowder though, the soup had a watery consistency to it and there was barely any clams in the chowder)

  • Andrew D.

The fish (we had cod) are fresh and are of very good quality. The clam chowder I found to be very mundane and would not order it again though. It took over 35 minutes to get three lunch specials with 2 pc Cod and Chowder. It was not like an obscure order. Point being, is be prepared to wait if going during lunch hour. They make the fish fresh and it tastes as such, so I can't really knock it other then I would think being so popular they would have their operation more streamlined. The 25 cent fee for any credit card purchase is strictly bush league. I don't mind places that are cash only and will gladly pay cash as needed for the right place. I also can understand a minimum charge for using credit cards. But to charge a 25 cent fee on a $20-30 purchase is lame. Overall great fish though. I would come back, just not between 11:45-12:45.

  • Grace B.

Definitely one of the most memorably fish and chip meals I've ever had, and I come from a coastal town that has seafood joints left and right. They have a nice deal of lunch specials from I forget when but till 1:30 where fish and chips with a drink are $6. I opted out of it because I specifically wanted to try their halibut fish, and most of the specials are cod. Either way I'm sure you can't go wrong. We waited about 30 min and my husband and I split the 3 pc halibut which came with fries (you can get regular, curly fries or salt and pepper chips), with a side of coleslaw. And we also had a bowl of clam chowder. The fried halibut was so flaky and just perfect. The crispy panko style batter was just the right ratio to the fish. With most fried fish I feel there's more batter than fish, but here no bite I had was without fish. Amazing. Yes, there's a long wait but you can't fault them given the space with one cook in the back, one cashier, and one table busser. It's a hole in the wall and frankly some establishments are better that way. But you should see the employees bust their butt. They can only go so fast. They are multi tasking like crazy, and do a fairly good with organization hence the term "soup nazi" when referring to them. But better them telling the customers what to do verses allowing cranky customers who can easily cause a ruckus.

They wouldn't serve us! My husband is handicap with ALS and we have an Emotional Support Animal, who was clearly marked with his vest and ID. We were.told that this was the place to go, the person that refused to take our order was told of the nature of the animal and we told him that access was required by Federal Law, he said no and walked away from us. Needles to say we also left, refusing to serve not only a physically handicapped person but a person that needs an emotional support animal. Sorry to say the drive was a waste of our time! Hmmm isn't this a ADA / ACLU suit in the making???

The fish and chips were amazing. The fish was one of the best I have ever had, especially for the price, the fries were normal (the options were: fries, curly fries, or home made salted potato chips). The clam chowder was extremely rich and had onions, but did not have as many clams in it as I had hoped; I could only handle so much of the chowder, but it was delicious. The staff is friendly for the most part, but they do hurry you out to get the next people in line - mainly because of the little room they had for dinning. There is outdoor seating and plenty of parking for the small location. All around, a good choice for a yummy ocean meal. Family owned, locally sourced, and quirky.

We visited J's Fish n Chips when we stayed in town, and we absolutely loved their F & C's. Located just one block from where we stayed, we read some good things about this place. Although, it took forever to get our food, it was well worth the wait. We later found out that there was a one man operation in the kitchen (no wonder it took so long to get our order!)We all ordered the Cod and fries and it was simply fantastic. The batter was deliciously crispy, and not oily. Fries were also good. This place knows how to make Fish n Chips!! There's plenty of parking in their lot. If you're ever in Lincoln City, you gotta eat here!

Gotta grade the whole experience Everything about this place is five star, except the experience. I know that the metaphor has been overused, but these guys are comparable to the Soup guy from Seinfeld. They are masters of their craft, but the space does not lend itself. However if they didn't run it the way they do, I could definitely see chaos. And nobody wants that. The downer is that the space is so small you can't really go in and sit and enjoy. No table has more than four seats and there are only 7 tables. You have to order, then wait to sit. There are lots of rules posted, and for the most part they make sense. Love the homemade salt and pepper chips. Like real potato chips. Some times you just don't want fries. You can also have curly fries. Nothing special, but it's nice to have the choice. I love the fish and chips. Perfectly cooked and coated. It's crispy and not greasy, and not heavy. It's a panko style batter, but has a lot of crisp to it. All of the cuts taste fresh too. Halibut, cod, all great. The chowder is a winner too. it's not as chunky as many chowders I've had, but it's loaded with flavor. All and all a pretty good value. My advice would be call ahead and get it to go and enjoy it on the beach.

The people who give this place bad reviews are the kind of people that bartenders and servers hate. We come here every time we are at the coast. The fish is very fresh and fried perfectly. We love the signs on the wall, we even joke that there should be more and they should be more harsh. Stupid people do not deserve to eat here. And I've never gotten bad service here, all smiles and great food, so if you have a bad experience, look in the mirror.

Run here! Thanks to yelpers, we discovered this hole-in-the-wall and I'm still craving more days after having it! I'm not a huge fried foods fan, but this place IS IT! This place isn't fancy, there are rules about take out and not reserving a table, but that's why I like it. Simply amazing fish with a nice crunch batter. Unfortunately, I made a horrible mistake the day after. Please cry with me. I was craving craving craving more J's Fish & Chips, but I was with a party and didn't want to suggest the same place for lunch although I really wanted to. Please learn from my mistake and just speak up! So we ended up at Pig n' Pancakes and I ordered fish & chips. Ugh. Please forgive me J!!! I am NOT making that mistake again. Save me some fresh fry...I'm coming again soon!

Fish was worth a 3. Pretty fresh and simple, a bit greasy. Pricey too. However, the food is completely overshadowed by the RUDE service and completely dingy atmosphere! The rudeness starts with the hand written signs upon entering. "Don't bring your to go trash back in!" "Order first and then you will be seated!" Wow, quirky rules. Very small and unclean place. Heaven forbid, don't sit outside and then decide it's too windy and try to return indoors to sit. You will promptly be turned away and told you can't sit at one of the other empty tables because they are "reserved". Seriously?!?! Horrible customer service from the dark haired woman at the register. Overall, disappointed and would never return. What a shame, here we are on the coast and they can't do it right for us. Would rather pick up some fresh seafood at Barnacle Bills (highly recommend, at lower cost for more product) and make our own fish and chips. Just stay away.

The food is worth 3 stars. The experience is worth one star. The food: The fish (cod) and chips were decent. Well, the fish was pretty good and very fresh tasting. The chips (fries) weren't great. They were soggy, limp, and flavorless. The experience: The worst I've had in a long time. The place is small and dirty (it's a dump). There isn't much seating and the place was packed (seems popular). They have a lot of strange rules and are fairly rude to customers. I felt like I was bothering them by giving them my business. The wait at lunch time was about 40 minutes (standing in a crowded, dirty, small room). Bottom line: If you REALLY want fish and chips, and the Health Department hasn't shut them down yet, call in an order to go. Don't dine in. Either way, I'll take my chances elsewhere.

First time here. Outstanding food! We arrived at about 2:30 and the place was slammed. It was still amazingly busy when we left about an hour later. Sign of a good restaurant. We had the family pack of fish and chips with 10 pieces of fish and a huge amount of fries and coleslaw to share. A little slow but was well worth the wait, I will be back, and the workers didn't smile much, but we're pleasant. Like I said I will be back. Oh, one more thing, my GPS that connected from Yelp led us to the wrong restaurant. When we asked for directions to J's the worker there told us she preferred to eat at J's for their fish and chips.

When visiting the coast I like to call in an order to go. It saves waiting in line and (for 45 minutes) I take my food to my room or the beach. I've been multiple times and am never disappointed. Fish is always excellently cooked and the breading is crunchy and tasty. I usually get halibut fish and chips. Today we tried the coconut shrimp too and it was also cooked to perfection. Yum! I would recommend the halibut fish and chips, coconut shrimp and curly fries as well. Thanks J's for making a meal I can count on! I will be back again soon.

I don't see how this could get much better. We spent a few nights in Lincoln City at the beach with the beautiful, cool weather and the waves, sand, etc. Our hotel recommended this place and they were spot on! I'm only taking one star off for the lack of ambience. I realize it's basically a fish shack, which is fine, but it's mostly glass walls too, which isn't super pleasant late in the day when it's sunny. The fish was super fantastic though! It was crispy, hot and flavorful. The fries were amazing, I'm not a huge fries person, but these were outstanding. A neighboring table's fried clam strips and fried shrimp looked tasty, but we didn't have time to try J's a second night. I guess another visit to the beach is in order! Very, very good if you want that fried seafood fix!

We went to J's for the first time tonight. We ordered at 6pm on a Wednesday and easily sat down with 5 people. I ordered the 3 piece cod fish and chip basket. The fish was battered the right amount and tasted fresh; the fish was not slimy. The salt and pepper chips were ok but had room for improvement. Service was friendly and they do accept cards, however with a 25¢ fee. This is one of the better food options for the value in Lincoln City. J's is worth the stop if you are on the fence and can't decide on a place to eat.

Beachside perfection, I definitely recommend this place when at Lincoln City beach. My father and I each went with the three piece cod while my mother ordered the fish tacos. We all also ordered a bowl of clam chowder. If you're looking for a quick meal, do not come here as there will be a long wait due to the high volume of customers this place draws in. Excellently battered fish and chips, with delicious clam chowder, my meal here was definitely worth the wait. Clam chowder could have been thicker, but that's all up to perosnal preference. Overall it was delicious and I enjoyed every bit of it. My mother really enjoyed her fish tacos as well. If you like seafood and excellently battered fish, this place is the spot.

This is great food, IF you can follow all the rules. We call this place the Fish Nazi after eating here one time while on vacation last weekend. There are rules posted everywhere, and we dared violate because my husband went and sat at a table while I ordered (that's right--we sometimes jaywalk too). I held my breath while I waited for the owner to see my hubby sitting down (gasp!) and I was sure she was going to yell across the restaurant, "No fish for you!" We did manage to get our fish, and we enjoyed it very much. Very good food. My husband had the curly fries and I had the salt & pepper chips are both were yummy along with our halibut and cod. I'm sure we'll return when we're in town, and maybe I'll empty my car garbage into their trash can and see if I still get served. I managed to get pics of some of the rules (oh, and the lack of a closing time...apparently they close whenever the heck they feel like it. My guess that is probably at 5pm some nights and they don't care how hungry you are or how much your puppy-dog eyes tear up. I missed a pic of the rule about pouring your extra drink into a bucket on top of the trash can, and the other sign about not throwing away the baskets. But I think I got the rest. So I recommend eating here, if they'll let you. Today may not be your day. NO FISH FOR YOU!

Boy is this tiny... The old Top of Hill restaurant sits vacant next door and would be a much bigger location. When you enter there are handwritten signs on the doors, never really a great sign of what is to come. The biggest sign was telling you to order first then the tables are first come first serve. Seems they have trouble with people taking tables then ordering, the shame... The room is tiny, with maybe 8 tables of various shapes and sizes. For a seafood place it really seems small. The place has seen it's better days and really needs a full overhaul. With the constant flow of traffic they clearly are making money, time to re-invest. The order taker was covered in tattoo's, not scary, but not what you expect either. I paid the extra and got the Halibut fish and chips. Portions were just the right size. The breading was thin, to the point of falling off, but hey, they gave me a fork so no problem. It was very tasty. I would recommend this order.

Tonight was my third visit to J's. I wanted to get an average of at least 3 visits before writing my review. The 3 piece cod is ok but it is not worth waiting 30 minutes for it. I (and my wife) think they have changed their french fries. It's not like I have an acute palate memory of individual orders of fries but as I was thinking to myself about how the fries taste different my wife commented that she thought they had changed brands. The slaw is ok but again not worth the wait. I have to laugh at the soup nazi references in other reviews because I thought the same since my first visit. Tonight, after placing my order, I actually asked the counter-person - Where do you want me to stand? She pointed to a spot in front of the bin where diners placed their used plastic serving basket and glasses. It was from this spot I could see the owner fill the orders. And yes it appears, as other reviewers commented, that he does one order at a time. So if you want to spend 30 minutes of your life waiting for fish and chips, go ahead...until you finally realize the wait is not in direct proportion to flavor.

Here we are, one year later and we're back at J's. I had fried shrimp again and hubby had the halibut. Normally, I can't tell one white fish from another, but that halibut! WOW! It might drag me away from the fried shrimp next time we go. (Which will be in a few days.) Preparation hasn't changed. The cooking is perfect. I got an extra cole slaw so I would have my veggies. The salt & pepper chips are still delicious. One or two soft ones, make no nevermind. I don't know about anyone there being rude. Everyone has been nice to us. One week later: I knew I left my beloved old jean jacket somewhere I ate. Of course, it was here and they saved it. Thank you guys! Finally had the halibut and it was everything I expected, moist, crisp and delicious. Also tried the curly fries which were also tasty. Still our #1 fried fish joint!

Couple reasons why I gave this a 5 star, 1. Everything is fresh, from fresh fish daily, to breaded and battered as soon as u order it. 2. Visited first time on a Friday night was very busy , had a great meal looking. Observing all the food that came out during there rush was very consistent. By what I was impressed with is on a Monday when they open up were packed right of the back. Driving by the place throughout the day still packed ! (on a Monday ) I had the 4pc sampler halibut, prawns comes with a choice of curly fries , reg fries , or house made chips.

  • Eli A.

The cod and halibut have the perfect crunch. The homemade potato chips are delicious and the fish tacos have just the right seasoning and sauce. It is a small joint with limited seating but it worth it.

Food is great. Owner has lots of rules and signs telling you what is not ok. We followed them but it made for some laughs as we kept finding more. Fish tacos were great!

  • Chuck M.

First the good: The batter on the Cod was light and crispy and the fish was fresh, moist and flaky...not at all greasy. The fries were also quite good and had a crispy outer texture and tender interior. The coleslaw was also good and not overpowered with mayo. The Salt and Pepper chips were just okay and included some chips that were chewy from not being fried long enough (I would just order the fries instead next time). The bad: What's with all the signs everywhere instructing patrons about what they cannot do? If there is a problem with people moving the tables then take that as a clue that perhaps you should have at least some seating for more than four people. If a family needs to push two tables together to eat together try being accommodating, smile and offer a hand. Is there a problem with people bringing their trash back inside after being forced to eat outside due to a lack of seating inside? They have paid to eat your food...deal with it and empty the garbage if necessary (it's better than forcing your guests to take it home to dispose of it...or worse). Try smiling and asking how they liked your food unless you care more about forcing people to conform to arbitrary rules...It just makes the business look bad, not friendly and customer centric. While the food is good, the less than friendly staff and the warning signs everywhere are indications that the folks that run this establishment do not like people and perhaps don't even enjoy what they are doing. I heard the staff comment about how glad they were that "tourist season" was over and how they were looking forward to slower business...to me that is just insanity when you are running a business. 4 stars for the fish, fries and coleslaw...but 1 star for the non-customer friendly signs and staff attitude.

My worst fish n chips nightmare is when the breading becomes this oil-soaked sleeve around the fish and the first bite you get is just soft batter... no fish. You all know what I'm talking about! And so it's always a little game of chance when I order the fish n chips anywhere. Will I hate my life for eating like crap? Or will I hate my life for eating like crap, plus have vegetable oil running down my face and hands? Looks like I won this round with J's. Although fried, the fish tasted light; the breading was crunchy and crumbly; the fish moist with perfect tenderness; and above all no dreaded oil-sleeve. Served with a delicious side of tartar sauce that had a kick of vinegar to it. So good. Limited seating and the food comes out a bit slower - expect that coming in and don't bitch about it in a review. There are many establishments that serve great food, but are limited on space; lack of seating is hardly their fault and really just speaks to their popularity. When I went it was a happy local joint and it's definitely worth the wait for the quality you get.

  • Jami Marie F.

The service and atmosphere get a 2, the food a 4. There are signs everywhere, "don't move the tables" and "to-go means to-go" and "if you order to-go don't bring your trash back in here" and "absolutely no substitutions" and "order inside and wait, then you can have a table when one is available." It gives the strong impression is that my presence is a burden to the people here. The food, fresh and pretty good. But I won't come back because I'm not sure they like people in general.

Love this place! GREAT food, esp the homemade potato chips. Seriously! And don't let the signage and rules bug you.... they are fiercely popular and are just trying to keep it where their customers can get in and out. Go for the food, not the ambiance, and if crammed table space is a bummer for you, just take it to the beach and enjoy every delicious morsel. My hubby and I endure the line and it always works out and we have never been disappointed... and the service has always been very efficient, as much as they can with the space they have. We know to not be pressed for time when we stop. Sometimes the wait is short, sometimes upwards a half hour. I would not recommend towing a cranky hungry toddler in here, but if you can be patient, It Is Worth It !

U go here for the FOOD!!! I wrote a long review on my food blog "new mom starting from scratch" about a year ago. I've gone to Js now several times. We literally drive from Salem to just come here and get r fried seafood fix. I I have a 5 year old daughter who LoVES their fish and finishes it all!! My husband and I always get the same thing. He gets the Halibut and I get fish tacos. I have tried their chowder a year ago and I did not care for it, so never bothered to eat it again. BUT I was here yesterday and I was so hungry I needed to eat so I ordered a cup. I don't know if my taste buds changed or if they messed with the recipe but oh my word is tasted so much better!!! It actually had great flavor!!! My mom who has had a cold and was having a hard time tasty food actually could taste it. I LOVE their homemade pepper and salt chips!!! They r so good u must order just a side basket of chips. I also love their fish tacos and fried shrimp!! There r two front cashier workers (don't know they're name one is blond the other is reddish) and they r very nice all the time. Sadly the guy who I believe is the owner has a less then friendly attitude and if I see him smile that's a rare occasion. But I don't care if he has the worse attitude on the planet his food is good!!! I will follow HIS instructions and do as he asks bc I want their food! That's how my we love it. I've introduced family and friends and everyone falls for this place. It's the best place I've found in Lincoln City so far. Best fried food, light and crisp and fresh!!

So as I said with my last review, I wondered if it was a mistake about the service and the food. Well, my family and experienced a different side. The service was abrupt and almost rude or better yet, indifferent if we were there or not. We ordered the Cod instead if the Halibut, big mistake. The Cod was good but not excellent. The Halibut last time was dynamite. The clam chowder was amazing again and so was the shrimp but the reason for the 3 stars instead of 4 or 5 stars was purely the service. I own a business and for me to see that customer service is not a priority and not even considered important is just beyond me.

Right when we walked in, the tiny restaurant was crowded with nowhere at all for a decent sized family to sit. The woman taking orders wasn't overly friendly and I didn't feel very welcome. Also not very welcoming were the rules about trash posted everywhere. We ended up sitting outside because that was the only big table available. The spot was loud because it was right next to the highway, and super windy so I was pretty uncomfortable while I waited. It seemed to take a long time for the food to arrive, and we were left confused as to whether we needed to get the food inside or if it would be brought out to us. The wind had me eating my hair along with my fried clams! Yes, the food was delicious. However, I feel like the restaurant was not very welcoming to the customers, so I have to give it only 3 stars.

I have to give this place a lower review not because of the food, but because of the restaurant itself and the service. The food was tasty for sure. Not a fan of the slaw (pretty much tasted like cabbage with black pepper on it) but the cod was great and the chowder was good. Now... The door itself is even unwelcoming. There was a sign posted that read "To go is to go. You may not bring your trash back in." Fair enough but not a super nice way to request that. This sign was also present inside the restaurant. In addition to those signs, there are requests (more like demands in some cases) posted all over the restaurant. Very aggressive / off-putting tone. The girl at the counter was pleasant enough though not super friendly; played it pretty aloof. Also noticed her on her cellphone at the register for an extended period of time. Not a huge deal (though does she wash her hands before she touches food??) but not super professional either. Shortly before we left, a couple kids walked in and the first thing she said was, " We close in 15 min so we're doing to-go orders only." Never greeted them. That brings me to the next thing... There are no clear hours posted; the sign simply says they're open from 11:30 to close. From what they girl at the counter said, they apparently close at 7:00 which seems very early for a restaurant. Not sure if maybe those hours vary? My husband said that the staff's demeanor plus the rules posted all over the place made him fearful someone may doing something wrong, feel the staff's wrath, and get kicked out. Not exactly what you want for a restaurant. Overall, food was pretty decent, but I might have to get it to go if I eat there again... ...and I'll be sure to take my trash with me. ;-)

Place is great. Recommended by a friend so we read all of the reviews before we went there. Arrived on a Thursday 3:15pm to beat the crowd. Had our food by 3:22pm..... same day.......we were shocked. Employees were smiling, very friendly. Oh yeah the signage, its everywhere. Stop signs, yield signs, do not walk, no parking, its a mad house there in Lincoln City.

I don't care how good your food is. If you can't provide at least a mediocre level of service, that's down right pathetic. We waited an hour, yes an hour. I sat there with several other tables of irritated guests waiting for food. The only orders I saw go out for the first 45-50 minutes were to go orders. I can't believe I just waited that long for some deep fried food. I've eaten here in the past and it's fine food. But after this, I most certainly will NEVER be returning. When I asked to check on my order at the 45 minute mark, I was very polite asking if they would mind if I checked how much longer. I couldn't tell if the guy was trying to be funny or not when he said that he did mind and it would be another 5-10 minutes. Ordered our food at 5:00, asked for status at 5:45, got one bowl of clam chowder at 5:55 and our fish and chips at 5:59. If you see even a minor crowd don't bother.

You know the place is good when there are more locals than tourist! Fish was fresh tasting & lightly battered wtih panko. We also had clam chowder. Very unique, sweet tasting chowder. Could of defintely used more clams, but that was just my personal preference. Truly a good legit chowder. If you want good fish and chips this is the place to visit. note: You come here for the food. Comre here with a open mind, be prepared to wait in line, wait for a table, and follow the rules. If you complain about the rules or the atmosphere, then you need to go elswhere. Its all about the food here and the people that run this place do it right.

Food was amazing...probably the best fish and chips I've ever had. But I'm giving them 1 less star for their attitude. There are signs everywhere that are negative in nature. Almost like the soup nazi from Seinfeld.

As a local, it is tough to find good seafood in Lincoln City (in my opinion). Perhaps because I was spoiled living in Monterey, CA. but Mo's has got nothing on J's!! When I'm craving fish & chips or chowder, this is where I go. Sure people can complain about the atmosphere or it being too small, but why mess with a good thing when it comes to the quality of the food they are serving. Bigger locations come with higher over head costs, and a lot of people don't understand that making a buck in a tourist town is hard enough in the off season. I'd much rather them keep their doors open in a small location rather than being forced to close because the overhead is too high in the winter. I know I would much rather pay for good food and deal with the cramped quarters than have a spacious booth and mediocre food...

Great food, they were kind with our nutty Kids... Mac and Cheese with shrimp was a hit with our 5 year old. Fish of the day was well-prepared but with a small piece of fish and green beans, was a pretty light lunch.

Good food but bad policies - why can't you change an order to stay in the restaurant? Makes little to no sense that a restaurant who asks for tips on the credit card receipt cannot adjust to a minor change or eat here instead of Togo. If a restaurant cannot handle something as simple as this then one has to wonder why....

This place was fantastic! There was a bit of a wait, but it was well worth it. Everything was fresh and locally caught. The reason it took awhile for the food was because they made it fresh for every order. We were visiting from out of town and ate there two nights in a row after checking out some other places. It was an amazing value! The fish and chips were excellent!

My second visit to J's Fish and Chips for lunch. Located on the East side of Highway 101 just South of the Outlet Mall in a tiny yellow building. Seating: 7 tables: 2 that seat 4, 5 that seat 2. Two picnic tables out front, but some folks did have to stand and wait for a place to sit. Clean, and as usual, packed! If you are going to be there during peak lunch hours, think about calling ahead, The wait today was 20-30 minutes. The waitress was new and despite the hoards of folks, kept smiling. So---why are we all there? The FOOD! The fish is FRESH, lightly battered, and fried to golden, crunchy perfection: I had the $6 special, which is 2 pieces of cod, tartar sauce, fries, and a drink. The $8 cod fish and chips is three pieces of fish + tartar sauce, plus a small container of their fresh, delicious slaw + fries and a beverage. Halibut is a couple of bucks more: but I prefer the lighter, moist cod! So, yes, there are a few signs around the place, but they are not intrusive and shouldn't stop anyone from visiting this little gem of a eatery and enjoying their really great food!

    (4)
  • Sara G.

Oh my goodness. If you want the best FRESH fish and chips and don't care for the fancy pants restaurants come here. The halibut fish and chips special was awesome as were the homemade salt and pepper potato fries. Go to the counter to order first before grabbing a table. Everything was clean and the decor is cute. Not fancy, but darn good food. If you're in Lincoln City don't miss it!

Pretty good food. But after waiting 45 minutes for fried food i expect it piping hot. Not worth the wait. This l food gets a 3 but waiting for so long in this dumpy shack sucks and detracts from the experience greatly.

  • James D. H.

Let's start with "CONS" 1. Fries are nothing special. They are most likely the same ones you can get at any fast food joint. We took our food togo and our short drive back was too much for processed french fries. 2 The wait time is a killer. I can't tell you how many people walked out just because of the wait time. We were told it would be at least 45 minutes (and was) for our order. After all the YELP hype. We had no choice, we had to find out! 3. Waitng area...... isn't one. Just 4 chairs against a wall. That or sit in your car and wait for your number to be called. 4. No way to know what order is ready without being inside. You have to keep checking by asking the counter people. 5. No T.V. 6. No music/radio. 7. No newspaper or any reading material to speak of. Just an empty stomach to keep you company. "PROS" 1. The Panko Crusted fish is to die for! Worth every second of boredom I spent waiting. Having worked the line (being a cook) for a number of years, has given me insight on how to streamline the process. I can think of a couple things they could do to streamline the process and kick out orders a lot faster but it's not my gig. I hope J's has continued success and never closes. Who know's. I may again have an hour to kill waiting for great fried fish. I doubt it but maybe.

  • Nicholas R.

This was a busy little place when I went here, but the food was worth the wait. I had the fried clam strips and curly fries, both cooked to perfection. I would surely give them my business again.

Fresh fresh fresh and so crispy delicious!! Definitely would recommended spending the extra $4 for halibut vs. Cod. Literally the best fish and chips I've ever had (and that's a bold statement). The owner is oh so rough around the edges and short in conversation, however nice enough. His lovely little signs all over the establishment are a bit uninviting, but quality of the food overshadows it. Definitely the best fish and chips in LC- best I'VE ever had!

This is a good stop when in Lincoln City. I typically go here for fish and chips or Norma's (up in Seaside) for clam chowder. I'll literally pick which beach town I want to go to based on what I'm in the mood for for dinner.

Best Fish and Chips! If you don't get fish here you can't be smart!! It's not a fancy place so you know they put everything into what you eat. That's totally okay with me because it was amazing. I had the fish and chips and my hubby had the shrimp/prawns. Both were great and the slaw that comes with was tasty. Love the tarter sauce also but fish had such good flavor it's not really needed. They also cook it just perfect. Everything is deep fried so don't come here if you want some ( I only do grilled or baked fish). Nope it's not here and I say move along, more for me! It will be the only place we stop for fish when in town. It was full of locals and other tourist which is also a great sign. The lady behind the counter I think may have been an owner she was busy busting out orders. She kept up with keeping it clean and getting food out quickly. It's small so it was full but they have orders Togo or dine in. I didn't feel like the wait time was horrible especially once you taste the food knowing its worth any amount of waiting. Can't wait to have again.

We ordered their 4 combo plate with shrimp, cod and halibut, coleslaw and curly fries, fish tacos. Fish fillet burger etc. Taste was good. Portion sizes were just right for dinner. The service was good, smiling crew. Price is north of $8+ for most combos. Really good deals here. The only downer here is that the outside needs to be cleaned up a bit. Grass is dry and brittle. landscaping is unattractive. The store needs some fresh outside paint. Otherwise, ignore the landscaping, the food is really good here.

We were in Depoe Bay vacationing and I read about this little hole in the wall restaurant. So we drove up there and was not disappointed. The fish and chips were so fresh and delicious. Clam chowder was off the roof!! We had to order another bowl because it was that delicious!! Admittedly, this restaurant could use an expansion....we were lucky to get in when we did. After we placed our order, the customers came pouring in and there was a line!! So for those of you who wants to try this place, i recommend you go in early to avoid the line. You won't be sorry!!

Excellent fish. Crowded at lunch, best to call ahead and take it to go.

Whenever we are visiting Lincoln City we have to eat at J's. Have eaten here at least a dozen times and it is always great! They do almost always have a wait but it is totally worth it! Favorites on the menu are the clam chowder (I think the best on the coast), fried halibut and fried cod baskets. J and his family are always friendly! Can't wait to come back and eat again soon!

I took my 89 yr old dad for dinner; and he was as impressed as I was. The meal was very good shrimp and cod fried with a panko crust, and made to order. Yummy !!!!!

Nice little place to stop for lunch. Good fish and chips and the fried clam strips and curly fries were perfect.

Best Fish and Chips in town, hands down. It's small, be prepared to wait, but it's worth it.

This is fish and chips with attitude. I love this place. I crave their food. The shrimp with the homemade chips are my favorite, but really it doesn't matter what you order. It's all good.

OK as long as you're good with everything fried. Clam chowder was some of best we've had.

Best fish and chips I've had in Oregon. The fresh rockfish was soooo good. Try all three types of fry/chip offerings. Seriously, a great stop on the Oregon Coast.

I get it. Great food. Nothing fancy. Even though the place is a shack and the wait is 30-45 minutes, I give it five stars. The chowder and the fish is awesome. Here are where the problems start and I begin to take away stars: The front door! Every time someone walks in, SLAM!! Someone walks out, SLAM!! It slams shut so hard and loud that it shakes the waiting area wall! Over and over, SLAM! SLAM! SLAM! Come on! Replace the broken hydraulic arm closer on your door already! It's been broken at at least a year! I always feel like I'm in an episode of Seinfeld, waiting and ordering from the soup nazi. The cashier is always unfriendly and rude. Today after I began to order, she interrupts me and snaps, "the wait for food is 30 minutes!" She then acted all put out because I went ahead and ordered anyway. There are handwritten-type signs ("rules") taped EVERYWHERE!! -"If you take your food outside, do not throw away your trash in our garbage can." (With only a few tables inside, we ate outside). Where do we throw away our trash? On the ground in the parking lot? -"25 cent charge for using debit/credit card" -"Dont move tables" -"Don't sit down until you order" -"50 cent charge for extra tarter sauce" List goes on and on. I didn't mind the wait for great food, but not with the other issues. I don't think we will go back.

A hidden gem at the coast, very small and cramped but worth it for the authentic and fresh fish they serve on their menu, this place hands down better then the overpriced chain moe's, where it was found that they used canned chowder and not fresh. This place very affordable and has amazing lunch specials for lunch nice little gem to come to every time you come to the beach

Very good cod. Lightly breaded with real chips and very fresh slaw. Friendly service. Just a hole In the wall but worth a visit if you're not in the mood for fancy.

  • Ken W.

Five stars for low prices and very good food. This is the best fried cod I have even had I think; certainly have not had any better. I was a little concerned when I called to ask what time they closed, as the person who answered was curt. But we were very glad we went. The man who took our order was nice and also took initiative to bring our kids extra bowls, utensils, etc. We have little kids and have often had a hard time finding a good fit for our young family in Lincoln City as the places we have tried either take too long to get the food out or are too nice (ambiance) and we spend a lot more money than we would have wanted to. We plan to return when we visit Lincoln City again.

I've never written a Yelp review before - I typically just look at them, but the service here was so outstanding and the food was so delicious that I felt the need to commend this restaurant on a five star experience. The line was out the door yet the woman working the cashier was also attending to a full restaurant, cleaning tables, and running food, all with a big smile and courteousness. She took time to genuinely ask if people were happy and went out of her way to provide excellent service, even when she was short staffed. I was so impressed. We got our food and it was beyond amazing. The clam chowder was creamy - not like the watered down chowder at other places. It was the best clam chowder I've ever had. You could tell it was made fresh. I had the fish sandwich and it was perfectly battered. The entire experience was delightful and I am so thankful to J's fish house for an unforgettable happy experience.

Well, my husband and I were going to give the famous Mo's a try, and are glad we didn't!! This place is the place you wanna go to for fish n chips!! I ordered the special, which was ling cod. It was cooked perfectly! My husband got the combo, that came with cod, halibut, and shrimp. He enjoyed it, but wished he would have ordered something else, as it wasn't as much food for the price. I love that they have 3 options! Regular fries, curly fries, or house made chips! We also ordered a side of clam strips!! Probably the best clam strips I've had!! They were crispy, and tender! The coleslaw was also delicious!! It is like they dress it to order, because it comes nice, fresh, and crisp! Not overdressed, or soggy, and flavor is spot on!! We had the clam chowder....The flavor of it is really good! It is however lacking chunks of potato, etc...And is a bit more like a "cream of" soup, rather than a chowder. When we are in the area, and looking for fish n' chips, this will be out go to place!!

  • Karen W.

Some of the best fish n chips we have ever had!!! Awesome flaky breading. If you don't mind a bit of a wait (this place filled up after we got there!!! We will definitely go back! :)

This is another "thank you Yelp" review. We drove to Lincoln City to get a view of the Oregon coast and wanted seafood. J's sounded like a winner based on past reviews and they lived up to the best of the reviews. The fish was the best I have ever had and the chip were a great change from french fries. Both were cooked perfectly. I could not have asked for more at this price. Don't go for the ambiance; go for the food.

  • felipe l.

One of best clam chowders. The fish was fresh and perfectly cooked, crisp, moist, and not greasy. Their house special potato chips, fries or curly fries are nice options. The place is small, but it's the best fish and chips in the area.

    (5)
  • Esther E.

Pretty much the best fish & chips we've had, at the coast or anywhere else. Prices are extremely reasonable, especially given the portion sizes. Large pieces of fish, just enough breading, not too much, not too little. Even the slaw is amazing! Family owned, made from scratch, just so good. We look forward to returning each time, and eat there at least twice each weekend we're at the coast.

  • Subrosa I.

We thoroughly enjoyed our lunch at this popular no-frills roadside diner. The clam chowder was creamy and tasty. The fish & chips and fish tacos were full of deep-fried goodness. The price was very reasonable. Our bill averaged out to less than $10 per person.

In reality...you can really mess up a simple thing like fish n' chips. However, when you find a happy balance between tender fish cuts and flavorful crispy batter that creates the end result J's puts out...you've come as close to striking fish n chips gold as you can get. Simple sides only compliment the meals and are just as flavorful. I tried both the Lingcod and the Halibut, both of which got the ol' head nod of approval and two thumbs up! Okay, so for the 4 star rating...how can that be you ask? The ONLY reason I give the 4 is solely due to a lack of seating and the confined space with the table layout. The wait for food is around 30 minutes...this can be up or down I would think based on the amount of people frequenting J's. I was there during a lunch rush and is where I got my 30 minute marker from...not bad when you consider the consistency in quality. So there you have it....give it a try if your a fish n chips lover it won't disappoint and if your not, it might just make you one!

At first, I was going to give this place two stars. They forgot our order. I was mad. However, after my wife and I realized what had happened, so did they. But unlike a lot of places we have gone to, they fessed up. Not only did what I assume was the female owner come over and apologize and confess to losing our order, the cook and teenager that I assume is a son did as well. The cook was the most apologetic, which being married to server, is one of the last things you will ever see. They never admit wrong. lol. "No problem" I said. At least they realized their mistake. Besides, we are at the ocean and in no real hurry. They proceeded to rush our food out to us with yet another apology. They fish was perfectly cooked, the chips and fries were all great, and the clam chowder, although being a little thick for my liking, had a wonderful extra seasoning that I couldn't quite put my tongue on. After being thankful for having the food be at least great for having to wait so long, they presented us with a gift certificate for the next time we were over, and yet again, another apology. I am highly impressed with their customer service, and can't wait to get back there to try to eat twice the amount as last time.

Ate here back in March of this year. My wife and I had halibut baskets. The fish was good with plenty to eat. A little lame that they charged me for some cocktail sauce after spending about $50. -1star for me getting a couple of pieces of cod mixed in with my family sized halibut basket. Maybe they thought I wouldn't notice or maybe it was a complete accident. I'd still go back! The chowder and slaw is pretty good. Went 2 days in a row.

  • Liza C.

been enjoying J's for a few years now. can't speak highly enough about their halibut- de-lish!!! my current addiction there are the fish tacos, simple, light and tasty. best F&C in town, no question.

  • Andrea M.

If you are in a hurry, do not stop here. $0.25 surcharge to use debit/credit and $0.50 for refills. Beverages are a $1.00 so not so bad. The clam chowder was ok and lacked claims. The cod was good- nicely breaded and fried. The curly fries and regular fries were nothing special, but tasted as you would expect.

    (3)
  • Nathan C.

If you're looking for only fried seafood this is the place for you. The halibut was really good but the cod was a bit rubbery. The breading they use really is one of the best I've ever had. Very light and crispy. The dining area is tiny! Smaller than any coffee house I've ever been to. My biggest complaint is their lack of anything other than fried stuff. I would like to try their clam chowder since it gets great reviews on Yelp.

  • Kendra C.

Y'all know I reserve my 5 stars for only the best! Yes, this is truly a five start joint. I had a combo basket with regular fries (1 cod, 1 halibut, 2 shrimp). It was $8.50 I think, and it came with a drink. This was the absolute best fish and chips I've ever had. The batter was perfection. The halibut has amazing flavor. The shrimp was light and fresh. The fries were perfect too; not soggy or greasy. It also came with a side of coleslaw. The coleslaw was excellent. Not too much dressing, just perfect. Now, I alway have to try clam chowder when I go places. This cup I wished I'd passed on. I'm not sure how they are able to call the soup clam chowder. It's a great potato soup with some clams thrown in. So if you're expecting good clam chowder, skip this one. Lastly, the joint is very small. expect to be cozy but it's surely worth it.

We thought we should give J's Fish and Chips another try, and are very happy we did so. The breading on the deep fried fish is light and crunchy, not at all greasy, and the cod itself is fresh, white, flakey and moist -- definitely a Home Run! We ordered the three piece combinations ($8.50 each), which came with curly fries (meh, they're fries) and cole slaw (again, just OK). We found the tarter sauce had way too much mayonnaise -- but hey, who needs tarter sauce when the fried fish is so SPECTACULAR !

Gave this place a 5 star review previously when I visited in the fall. Caught them this time on a busy Saturday in August. Food was not quite as good as the first time. Added a cup of chowder this time and it was okay, but had an odd flavor like curry added to it. Would not order that again. But the kicker of the experience was the snotty woman taking orders---she needs to be careful because in the winter time she will be looking for customers and wondering where her repeat business went. She was rude to several people waiting to get seating after ordering---my friend and I were lucky as we already had a table.

Holy bananas! I was on the coast during 4th of July weekend, mostly just checking out a few places here and there while I had unexpected time off and the weather was good. Turns out I spent a lot of time driving around and looking and realized around 3pm that I hadn't yet had lunch. While on the coast, I wanted coast-specific food (despite it being the busiest weekend ever, as I would soon find out). Fish and chips sounded like it would fit the bill and this place got great reviews and was on my trek northward. On the other hand, I've been a fish hater for pretty much ever. I'm okay with tuna sandwiches and homemade salmon on a rare lark, but generally fish and I are not pals. But I love seafood, so I figured that at the very least if I chickened out at the last minute (pun), I could get shrimp or chicken if I wanted. I showed up and the parking lot was tiny and full, so I parked behind the convenience store in the same area. I went in and the place was also quite full. By the time I got up to order there was a 40-ish minute wait, but I figured I had waited this long to eat already and it would be worth a shot. I ordered the Alaskan cod 3pc fish & chips meal and went to go find something to drink elsewhere in the downtime because I was parched. It turns out traffic was horrible and everywhere (even McD's where I was going to get a $1 drink) was totally packed, so by the time I got back (no drink, oh well), my food was ready. It. Was. Amazing. The cod was huge and delicious and flaky, and the breading was complementary. The french fries (I got curly) were a nice addition and there weren't too many of them. The squeeze of lemon and tartar sauce was like a religious experience. And the slaw was just creamy enough while still being crunchy as a nice side. Diet Pepsi was Diet Pepsi, but I was thirsty so it was beautiful. It turns out I could only eat two of the pieces of fish and part of the fries. This meal will fill you up. I took the leftovers home, in theory for my sister to try, but I kept thinking about them sitting in the fridge and had them for breakfast the next day. Ever since, I can not stop thinking about fish and chips. J's made me a believer and, as far as I can tell, someone who would actually order fish now. Amazing! Anyway, go here! Be prepared for a wait (avoiding a holiday weekend also helps); it is well worth your time. I would love to try one of the specials next time I am there. I played it safe this time, but local fresh fish now sounds really enticing.

We went on a weekday about 2 pm and they were busy, By the time our order came, there was a table ready us. We each tried one of their lunch specials for $6. I had the two piece cod with fries & drink. I almost got the homemade salt & pepper chips, as they looked so good, will have to on the next time. My husband got the fish tacos with drink. We shared both & loved them. The fish wasn't greasy & the batter was great. The fish taco's were really good too. Well worth the money. This is a small place but the food & service was great.

J's Fish & Chips was pretty good. A couple things could make it even better, but overall it was solid and probably the place I will return to for fish n chips when in Lincoln City in the future. The good: The fish was excellent. Light and tasty. Service was fast. Staff were friendly and helpful. The not so good: Fries were not impressive. Like a bag of frozen fries from a grocery store dropped into a fryer. Could make better ones at home. Clam chowder was just okay. Mo's chowder is much better. Lastly, there aren't many tables (only two tables that accommodate parties of three or more) and there also isn't much room to stand around and wait for a table. They need to consider adding on or something. Perhaps putting some sort of enclosure around their outdoor area since no one wants to eat outside. I've seen other restaurants do this very successfully.

Best clam chowder and cod I've had for years. Only poor thing I would say is the chowder needed more clams but flavor was so good I didn't miss them too much.

Best fish and chips I've had on the Oregon Coast, hands down -- in fact the only others in my memory that come close were from The Fish Store in Victoria. Three of us split two orders of the three piece baskets -- one cod, one halibut. Halibut is my thing, so I had two pieces of that. The coating was perfectly crisp, and the halibut fresh and perfectly cooked -- a few squeezes of lemon and some of their tasty tartar sauce made for fish and chips perfection. The coleslaw was excellent as well, with a flavorful sauce and fresh, crunchy cabbage. Those who had the cod were equally pleased. Our orders did take some time, but considering that this is a small place and we were visiting on a busy Friday afternoon, it wasn't anything unreasonable -- and it was well worth the wait. If yelp would have let me, I would have gone with 4.5 stars for this visit, because I really wanted a bowl of clam chowder, but they were out of it by 6:00 pm. Not a big deal, but I sure hope they have some next time I visit, because my wife has had it before, and she says it's really good! We now have a new tradition for our trips to Lincoln City.

This food is nothing short of fabulous. Granted, you WILL have to wait, probably more than 30 minutes. And there is not much room inside, but so what. Bring a book and you'll be fine. There are seating instructions both on the doors and inside that help significantly with the flow...when people actually pay attention to them. Their chowder is delicious, full of tender clams and flavorful. We have tried different fish each time we've come and have never been disappointed. If you happen to roll in when rockfish and chips are on the menu, go with it. It is seriously the best fish and chips ever.

  • Michael B.

Great fish & chips and the Clam Chowder was excellent. I would have brought more Clam Chowder home but was afraid it would spoil on the 3 hour drive. There is not a very many tables for this VERY busy little restaurant and you may have to wait in line to place your order at the counter and get a table but it was more than well worth it! Be sure to check their daily specials too.

This place is incredible. We were staying in Lincoln City a few years ago and had a hankering for fish and chips so we asked our hotel manager. Without pause he told us to go to J's and while we were skeptical as we pulled up, we quickly changed our minds. Yes, the service is a little rough, the place could use an overhaul, and the menu is limited but these are exactly the attributes that give this place so much character. The fish is amazing and it is clear that they care about the food. As silly as it sounds, I love that they punch holes in the to go boxes so the fries and fish don't get mushy. I've never had any other place do that. The fries are excellent, the coleslaw is some of the best and freshest I've ever had, and the tartar sauce is great. Expect to wait for your order. I suggest calling in your order. If you happen to be there on a day where the special is rockfish and chips, absolutely go for it. This is the tastiest fish and chips I have ever had.

We haven't been to Lincoln City in years. We used to come here all the time with my family and have fond memories, but great food was always a bit hard to find. Today we were hungry and just followed Yelps advice and stopped into this little spot. It's tiny and easy to miss but I sure hope you don't! Every single thing we ordered was amazing! Lingcod, rockfish and Alaskan cod fish and chips, clam chowder, chicken strips, curly fries, regular fries, salt and pepper chips, fried shrimp, it honestly was all to die for. People after us had to wait 40 minutes for their food but they all said it was worth the wait. Honestly some of the best fish and chips and chowder I've ever tasted and I've tasted quite a bit. It's a no fuss type of place but get in there asap. If you're in Lincoln City and need something to eat or hell even if you're not hungry... Go here because you aren't going to miss out! Go go go go! I'll definitely be back over and over again. This will revive my trips to Lincoln City.

BEWARE: DISCRIMINATION A POSSIBLITY. I will never recommend this place to anyone regardless of how good their food is. We consulted yelp for the best chowder place in Lincoln City and decided this place sounded great. When we ordered our food we let the lady know that we would be sitting outside on the picnic tables and we were told that they wouldn't bring our food out and that we would have to check back inside as they are busy. I had to go in to get our drinks and five minutes later the server came all the way out to call our number and tell us to come inside as our food was ready. Not sure why he didn't just bring it with him since he came all the way out. I went in picked up our food and returned to our table to dig in. The food was great until the lady who took our order personally delivered three plates of food to a man and his two boys sitting at the outdoor picnic table directly across from us and I overheard her taking an order from another couple and agreeing to bring out their order if they sat outside even writing it down on the order ticket. I couldn't help but think they didn't want to accommodate us because we were a gay couple. Good thing we tipped upon ordering because they definitely didn't earn our favor. The whole situation put a bad taste in our mouths and we will not return.

The fish is really, really good. Fresh great quality fish!!! However, the owner seems very angry & doesn't like customers. If you don't know the ordering routine he is mad & if you do know the routine he is mad. The dude might need Prozac before he freaks on a customer. Oh & don't even ask to use the restroom.

I had been wanting to try this the last couple of times while in Lincoln City and got the chance this weekend. Stopped in about 3:30 on a Saturday and it was busy but got a small table. Lots of people and take outs, the place is busy. I love seafood but fried is not my favorite, the batter has to be light and crispy, east coast style. I was pleasantly surprised. I had the cod and regular chips and good iced tea. The cole slaw was fresh. the fish tasted just caught and you could tell it was moist and it was not greasy. It was great!

Yes, it is small and seating can be a challenge.....but it is all worth it. We were a party of 7 and after reading other reviews, we decided we would forsake space for great food. Even though it was early (5:30 or about), all 7 of us laid claim to two very small tables and hunted down 7 chairs and just made it work! It was well worth the wait. Amongst us all, we had chowder ( thumbs up), baskets with a variety of fried cod, halibut and shrimp (thumbs up ) and fried clams, (thumbs up). The fish was Delicious!! The fries not hot and just run-of-the-mill variety. Whoever had the chowder saint it was good also. Definitely priced right. Will definitely go there again next time I am in Lincoln City. Friendly service with a smile in spite of the fact that we were a big party. Don't miss out on the fish basket......so good. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

J's opens at 11:30am. We arrived at 11:25. The door opened at 11:34. Actually the door wasn't opened. As we stood by the door, a lady appeared, unlocked the door, turn the sign around and walked off. I guess we were expecting some hospitality or a friendly greeting would have been nice. Certainly this was noted by other reviewers prior to us showing up. Here is my rating. Start with 3 stars. +1 star for the pricing. Less than $20 for two, 3 piece cod, chowder and drinks. +1 star for the panko breaded fish. No surprise here. -1 star for hospitality +0 coleslaw was essentially shredded cabbage, but free with dish. -1/2 the clam chowder was mostly white sauce, few taters, few clams and the potatoes were not quite cooked. However, the sauce was tasty. 0 the fries were ordinary, frozen then fried?? -1/2 everything is served in non-reusable plastic, but might contribute to the low costs. Overall, the pricing and fish were good, everything else is run of the mill. The place is small (~12 tables for 2) but it is what it is. Outhouse access located in parking lot. I suspect we were the 2nd order of the day and were served and on our way by 12:10. Probably will not be back due to the hospitality of J's. We tried it and will move on to other favorite places along the coast. Windflower café, blackfish (Lincoln City and Tidal Raves (Depot Bay, Georgies (Newport).

I would not go here again. The food was decent but not great. I ordered the fish combo (1pc cod, 1pc halibut, and two shrimp) with the curly fries. My husband ordered the clam strips with regular fries. We also ordered a cup of chowder to share. The chowder was mostly just a cream broth. There were barely any chunks of clams or potatoes in it and they went heavy handed with the pepper. The fish, shrimp, and clams were all cooked well. They weren't too greasy or over cooked. The fish had a nice panko breading. The fries were just fries. The biggest problem with this place is not the food but rather the restaurant itself. It is very cramped inside. There are only a handful of tables only two of which seat more than two people. You have to order before sitting. You can't have one member of your party order while the other saves a seat. People were seated at a table for four and told they would be moved again if a table for two opened up. Other people were standing around waiting for tables and no matter where they moved it seemed like they were in the way. This is obviously an ongoing issue and people have in the past opted to order their food to-go. We saw people eating from to-go containers in their car.. If you choose to do that don't plan coming back inside. There were signs in multiple locations saying you could not bring your to-go containers inside to throw them away. There was a charge for more than one sauce, drink refills, and using a debit or credit card. My biggest complaint of the whole experience was the cleanliness of the restaurant. While waiting for our food we became aware of how badly the place needed to be deep cleaned. The walls, pillars, garbage container, base boards, etc do not look like they have been thoroughly cleaned in a long time. I couldn't help but wonder if this is what the area we could see looked like what does the kitchen look like. Next time I'll take my money to Moe's!

Went here with the boyfriend based on the reviews of fellow yelpers and we were not disappointed! Got the sampler basket and chowder. all delicious but thumbs way up for their fried shrimp- simply the best- the most fresh and flavorful we've had(and my boyfriend worked in seafood restaurants for 13 years) the clam chowder has a unique flavor that, while not our all time favorite, was definitely a delicious bowlful!

Great place to eat. We used to go to another restaurant in town but their prices have gone up and the quality has gone down. Tried J's and everything is great. Small hometown feel in their restaurant. We will visit them again next time we are in town!

My husband and I came to the coast after watching grandkids for a week and felt like having fish and chips. I did look on Yelp for help and saw some of the reviews for this place, both good and bad. We decided to try it and did enjoy the food; however, after reading all their signs, about what we should and should not do with our "trash" and all the charges for extras, we felt like we couldn't even ask for extra napkins or we would be charged. The cashier was very unfriendly and we felt like it was a hostile environment. All we could think about was eat and get out immediately. My husband says it all with "we will never come back here again!"

Before heading home after a few days in Lincoln City, we decided to try out J's after reading many good reviews. Not sure where those reviewers were reviewing. J's is a passable hole in the wall roadside fried fish joint although there is huge upside with just a few easy changes. Before even ordering we joked that we might have accidentally stopped at the 'house of no'. There were so many signs telling the guest what couldn't be done, ordered or what costs an extra charge. This place seemed to have a soup nazi feel about it. We were not thwarted in our interest to try J's out even though the signs seemed to be telling us otherwise. My wife had seen that weekdays had a chowder, bread & soda combo, so naturally asked if bread was available with a bowl of chowder even though it was Sunday. The inquiry wasn't asking for the weekday combo, just if there was bread available. The answer was NO. I ordered the 3 pieces of Cod. We both ordered soft drinks noting that there was a sign on the counter that refills were 50 cents & extra sauces were 25 cents each. While my wife found the taste of the chowder flavorful, what she didn't find were clams, fish or potatoes. Looking at the sing again, it clearly does say 'chowder' it didn't say 'clam' or 'fish' chowder. My cod was breaded nicely & perfectly seasoned. To accompany the cod, I had ordered curly fries which also were well cooked & seasoned albeit a bit on the skimpy side. Bottom line, this place is passable but come in with low expectations until they make a few simple changes: - get rid of a few of the 12+ NO signs we saw throughout the restaurant. Maybe the sign 'we reserve the right to refuse service' should be the first sign to go. - add some texture to the chowder. Certainly there is plenty of seafood bits that are by-product from the other fried seafood menu options. - if there is a bowl & cup price option be sure that the bowl is bigger that the cup & not just a different shaped container that can cost twice as much as the cup without holding a proportionate amount more chowder. - toss in some extra fries to give the platter a hefty look. Potatoes are cheap and perception is priceless. Yes, the food is decent but be sure to have your expectations in check before heading to J's until they become more of a yestaurant.

We love Js- fresh and yummy seafood. I usually get halibut fish n chips. However I had the halibut bites the other day and do not recommend. Tiny bits of terribly overlooked fish. Also there's always a long wait- they only seem to have one person cooking at any given time. It was frustrating waiting so long at lunch time - 1:00 or so because there was a gigantic phone order that was being cooked while we and others sat and waited. Stick with fish n chips and don't wait til your starving to go.

Great first find on yelp this place will not disappoint fish was awesome even my wife loved it went with the salt and pepper chips on recommendation of staff and loved them too.dining room is small but for lunch it works.we will be back again. Update we have been back several times and love it every time this place is getting popular and the lines are gettin long bummer. Oh well can't keep a good place a secret for ever

The fish and chips were the best I've ever had. My family of 6 got the cod family pack. 10 pieces of cod, chips and cole slaw. Even my 3 year old ate it. And I thought the clam chowder was better than mo's.

MMMMM .. MMMM, YUMMY!! finally a place to stop and eat after our drive to the coast and before we had to head home. Nice and clean, loved the beach decor, collections. we were welcomed in, given time to look over the menu without being rushed. I had the Shrimp, nice and crispy. JUMBO size not the skippy bite size some places give you . I belive it was around $9 for the plate that came with a drink and some fries (curly, regular or salt and pepper home made) wi-fi would be nice to have with reception being so low in the area. made it hard for us yelpers to check in till we were about a mile away. Bathroom is located outside, under the stairs. you can get the key from cashier.

Fish was good. Price was great. 25 minute was a bit annoying, but it was the lunch hour and good food takes time, right? On the awkward side, seating is limited and only handed out after ordering; There isn't a place to sit and wait if you ordered to go, so be prepared to dance around the people coming, going, and wait service. You're probably not going to find a better deal for good fish and chips.

    (4)
  • Bobbi J.

Left without food as the wait was rediculous! And there were no seats available as everyone was waiting for food. Poor service with an attitude.

  • Erin O.

I ate here in a party of three and it was definitely crowded for the first bit. Even with our small group it felt like we were taking up waiting space and were in the way. However it seemed like that was just the way it was. It did take awhile for us to get a table and then some more time before we got our food, but when we did it was amazing. Having had some other random sub-par fish and chips the night before, we were especially impressed with the quality of the fish. We overheard a local saying the fish were caught that morning and they closed when the fish was gone. Cool! I definitely recommend the clam chowder, probably the best I've ever had. Really. It's worth the wait.

Love this place, it's my first stop for a meal every time I head to the coast for the weekend. It's short on atmosphere but long on character. The fish & chips special (today was rockfish) is fresh, the batter is crispy, the cole slaw is simple and not overdressed, and there is a choice of regular or curly fries. The fish tacos are absolutely super duper. Usually there's just one waitress to take orders and deliver food to the table, but the system works well. There's often a line for a table but the wait is never long.

    (5)
  • Kirstin D.

The halibut fish and chips was amazing with curly fries. Served piping hot not greasy just flavorful and perfectly crisp. I found the chowder bland. We went RIGHT at closing so it might be better earlier in the day. Its a great fish and chips joint.

I am in such a quandary here.... I have never had such fantastic fish and chips in my life, yet 1 star?!?! If you can get over the rude tattoo'd lady at the register screaming at a 4 year old child ( not mine ) for moving a chair and making a noise that she finds annoying, fine. If you can get over being yelled at and embarrassed in front of a whole restaurant for sitting at a table while waiting for your wife to get out of the car before you order ( huge deal right? ) then fine. If you can get over same angry lady going outside to do what looked like a shady drug deal out of a van to then come back, not was her hands and then hand you your food. Then you will enjoy the best fish and chips you have ever had. Couple things these people need to learn... they need our money more than we need their fish! If they continue with this pattern of "we are doing them a favor" by coming in and eating their food they won't last long. Because if it's one thing we can get plenty of on the Oregon Coast, it's fried fish. Second and this one blew me away, if the sound of YOUR chairs sliding against YOUR floors bother you so much that you'll yell at a four year old girl to stop moving them... then buy some felt and fix the problem yourself moron!

Took my dad based on yelp ratings and we were both thrilled with what we ordered. The crispy coating on our halibut, cod, and shrimp combo was perfect and it was clear just how fresh it all was. I could love without the fries easily, as well as the coleslaw but bring on that great seafood. A pretty sad building but amazing food. Try it

We ordered a family pack which came with 10 pieces of cod, a basket of cole slaw, a basket of fries and 4 soft drinks for $25. The breading was light and crunchy - different than the usual fare. It was delicious. We would have tried the clam chowder, but they ran out. Service was friendly.

This is EXACTLY how a fish & chips diner should be. Cod, Halibut, or Shrimp & Chips: My wife and I shared cod and shrimp and the breading was light like tempura, but solid enough to keep the pieces from falling apart. Very tasty. I don't know if things changed in a year, but the chowder we had was perfect. Legal Seafood-esque. It was seasoned well, the spoon stood up, and there were clams and potatoes in every bite. The potatoes weren't over cooked. It was divine.

The food was delicious! We shared the family pack which included fish and chips, cole slaw, and drinks. Since it was a Tuesday, we didn't have to wait at all. The place is a dive, but the food was worth coming back for.

went here looking for a good fish taco. what i got was OK, but nothing special. the wait was a solid 35 minutes. $5 for two small tacos, which left me hungry. fish was deep fried, which is not my preference. If I drop by this place again it will be because I have a craving for fish and chips.

Not Fancy, really tiny (18 seats-6 or so tables I think) but the food was fantastic. Best Chowder ever! Homemade chips- hot and good. We had the 3 pc Halibut and Fish Tacos. We will be back.

  • Lona R.

I had the halibut fish & curly fries. It was very good. The tarter sauce tasted like mayo and the coleslaw was more like cabbage and a little mayo. But they had great diet pepsi. The place was very clean but very plain.

For a family of 4 @ $30 you can't go wrong with this little place. Simple fish and chips place with great fish, gotta try their homemade chips, and delicious clam chowder. Service was very personable and friendly too!

This tiny, white-clapboard shack provides some of the best fish and chips you'll ever eat. The fried halibut is served hot out of the oil, crispy on the outside and perfectly flaky, sweet and fresh on the inside. The three-piece is a bit pricey ($12) but well worth the money given the generous portion of fish. I recommend the homemade chips as a side, which are hot and a bit soft and just potato-y enough to sit miles above the traditional kettle chip.

  • Scott B.

Excellent fish and chips. We ordered a family order which include 10 pieces of fish, fries, coleslaw, and 4 drinks which was a bargain. We split our fish order to try both the cod and halibut which were both excellent. Flavor, size, texture, freshness, and price were right on. The place was modest, but clean and people were very nice. The fish taco was the same fried fish with their coleslaw in a tortilla. The coleslaw was pretty blaw. Nice to find fish done right.

We had arrived for a weekend of camping in Lincoln City late on Friday night due to an accident that delayed traffic. We were tired, cranky and starving from being in the car all day. We decided we didn't want to mess around with trying to cook anything at the campground so we set out for a nice, casual, easy dinner in town. I decided some clam chowder sounded great so we went to J's. Unfortunately they had run out of chowder by the time we got there (I think it was around 6ish), so we both got an order of the fish and chips. Comparing this place to Mo's (which we went to later in our trip), I thought J's had better fish and chips. They were more flavorful and less greasy. This place is tiny, I think there were only six or seven tables and they were all full pretty much the entire time we were there, so it might be better to get take out than to eat in. We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner and will definitely be back the next time we're in Lincoln City.

One of the better places to eat in lincoln city on the Oregon Coast. I stopped in last weekend for the cod, halibut, and shrimp basket with fries and a small coleslaw. The fish seemed fresh and the breading was not too heavy. The flavor was really good especially the halibut. Portion size was good and for $9 it's reasonably priced. Service was not bad. You order at the counter and they bring it out. It only took about 10 minutes to get the food. I will definitely go here again.

  • Aaron S.

Great fish tacos and cheap at $5. Comes with warm tortilla chips, nice touch. Mates fish and chips for the kid was also good, not fond of panko batter but the fish was tender and the fries tasty (fish tacos had perfect beer batter). The place was tiny, slow service at 3pm but the owner said that's how it is on a Saturday this time of year. Fish was definitely worth the wait. Skip the chowder, nothing special.

  • Debbie T.

Since this was my first time at J's, I tried the combo that came with Halbit. Cod and Shrimp. There was a choice of fries, curly fries or homemade chips. This order came with cold slaw and a drink for $8.50. I thought that was a good price. I liked the chips, but the fish was put on top of them which made the chips soft from oil. I could tell the fish was fresh by the way it tasted and it was good. I bought a cup of chowder for $2.00, but the chowder was boring. It was a cream base with nothing in it. J's is at the south end of Lincoln Ctiy by the Hilltop restaurant. You order at the register. The sign on the door says hours 11:30 to close. So I assume that close means when the business of the day is over.

  • Randall J.

Excellent Fish and chips. The fish was moist and fresh, the crust the crunchy. We spent 3 days at the coast and we ate at J's twice. The prices are great, the two meals we had at J's were the tastiest and cheapest meals of or trip, you can't beat that. We would have driven past this place if not for seeing the reviews on yelp.

  • Tyson H.

This place is odd. My wife and I went in for dinner on a recent trip, and entered an empty J's around 6pm on a Wednesday. I don't grade them down for being empty, I only point it out because it can be a bit unnerving to eat totally by yourself. Anyway, we were greeted in a friendly-ish manner and ordered halibut fish 'n chips, the combo platter (one piece halibut, cod, and two shrimp and chips) and two bowls of clam chowder. The chowder was good, but we were quickly asked if it was warm enough. It was semi-warm, but fine. After telling the employee this, I then heard her shuffle to the back and explain to the cook that they indeed had microwaved the chowder for long enough, and that 45 seconds would indeed do it. I think the chowder was fresh, just nuked to meet the standards of people who weirdly demand hot food. Anyway, the fish was all that it is cracked up to be- moist, flaky, delicious. Not greasy at all. It was evident that the batter was near perfect- hot enough, and gently used. I will go back to J's.

When J's opened, it was literally at the bottom of the street I was living on at the time and I didn't even know it had opened until my sister asked me to go to lunch with her there one day. She had tried it before and said they were really good. We walked down to the restaurant and since I had never been in the building before, I wasn't sure what to expect. It is by no means a large dining operation with a very small dining area with several two person tables. It definitely fits the profile of say... a fisherman's little restaurant. It was a few years ago that I originally went there with my sister so I couldn't tell you what I ordered but I do know I enjoyed it. I moved away for a couple years and upon returning, I was constantly getting told to eat there by people so I went back. I went in and ordered a couple meals to go for my fiance and I. She isn't a seafood eater so I ordered her the chicken strip basket and I ordered myself the special at the time, which was Ling cod, a local species of Cod. The gentleman who helped me, who I believe to be J himself, was very helpful in explaining the difference between regular Cod from the east coast and ling cod. He explained that ling cod has larger flaked meat than other cod and also more flavor. For this reason I ordered it being a local fish and more meaty. I believe they use their own breading for their fish as well. I brought it home and it was so fresh it was still almost too hot to eat when I got home. My fiance was in love with the chicken strips she had as they were very flavorful and juicy. My ling cod was absolutely incredible. The meat's texture with the homemade breading was decadent and mouthwatering. The flavors just immersed my mouth with it's amazing taste and juices. I was in pure heaven. Now if you read my other reviews on how tough I rate a restaurant on it's food to it's service, there is nothing comparable when it comes to fish and chips. J has mastered the art of preparing this age old basket and the price is nothing to shy away from. I even had my fiance try it and being a fish hater, it took some persuasion to even get it near her but once she tried it, even she LOVED IT! There is no fishy taste at all. I mean NONE. A couple months later we returned on my birthday. My fiance liked and and saw how much I enjoyed it so this was my birthday surprise. I was a bit disappointed to see that they no longer were offering the ling cod on their menu as it had been replaced with Mako Shark. Being adventurous with food, I decided to give it a try and to be honest, I wasn't expecting much since my dad had tried shark about ten years ago and said he actually didn't like it (my dad eats everything). Again the shark came with J's own breading which was more flaky than the breading they use for other fish and chip baskets. Once I bit into it was very pleasantly surprised and I'm really not sure if it was just a different type of shark than my dad had tried or if it was just J's presentation of it, but it was wonderful. Just like the ling cod I had tried previously, the shark was absolutely delicious. The meat was juicy and flaky. It wasn't over cooked or undercooked and the flavor just washed over my mouth. If you have the chance, check this place out if you like fish and chips and as my friend told me, they also have the best fish taco's anywhere. DO NOT MISS THIS PLACE!

food was ok but all the signs are kinda tack...do NOT use this door....do NOT move this table....NO substitutions etc and the server was fairly nice but shewas taking phone order and she RUDE to the person on the phone. ..all this left bad taste in my mouth so even if the foodwas mind blowing it would not matter.. needless to say don't think we will be back.

Great prices but food was just okay. $8.50 for 4 piece combo: cod, halibut, 2 shrimps, chips, slaw, and drink. My friends and I were on a roadtrip along the Oregon Coast and had yelped this place in search for some great Fish and Chips. We're on the coast so we figured there should some good fish out here. The fish had a thick coat of batter, which didn't taste bad, but would like more fish rather than a small piece. If you are on the road and in the area and is looking for a cheap meal, this is the place to check out.

Last minute decision for dinner on vacation at the beach. The cod was wonderful and for a basket with choice of fries or homemade chips, coleslaw, and a soda it was only $8.50. The service was out of this world and the smell of the little place was mouthwatering. Only missed one star cuz they were out of chowder, but apparently that is a very common thing based on the woman working the register encouraging us to be there at 11:00 am because "it sells out fast"! Well, ok then. Deeeee-lish fish!

Kept thinking the place is owned by a schoolteacher. There are instructions everywhere on how to order, where to wait etc. But... the fish and chips are excellent. The fish here is panko breaded, not a battered style fish and chips you might get at places like Mo's. The fish was excellent, crispy without being greasy. The curly fries are better that the regular. We had the halibut, but the cod looked good to. Note on the chowder, its very creamy, not the thick potato laden style. I personally thought the staff was friendly and the service prompt. Good value for the money.

These are the best fish and chips I have ever had. From now on all others will be compared to these. The fish was cooked perfectly and instead of a heavy batter that leaves you with regret of eating fried food I was wanting to come back for dinner.

  • Michael V.

the clam chowder here is better than Mo's. absolutely delicious. really creamy. maybe a little peppery for some but i enjoyed it. i also got a 3 piece cod fish n chips ( curly fries) generous fish portions and lots of fries for $8.50. heck yeah! excited to come back and try thr fish tacos. they have signs up declaring them the 2nd place finished and people's choice champ of the 2012 fish taco cook-off. now i am excited this town has a fish taco contest!!!

This place is amazing! They were honest and upfront about a 40 min wait for food before we ordered. We didn't mind, if we would pack up the kids to drive somewhere else, then ordered, we would have waited just as long. Everyone was pleasant. Some customers tried to complain about the wait and wanting their drinks faster. The lady was juggling orders, cleaning the dining room, dishes, trash, and drinks. It wasn't like she was sitting reading the paper, so people needed to have a bit more patience! The food was great! We ate at another local supposed favorite the night before and wasted $100 on horrible, inedible food. This place was a different story. The halibut fish and chips with homemade fries was mouth watering. The shrimp and clam chowder weren't amazing, but it was still very good and it definitely gets 5stars compared to last nights disaster. We will come back when we are town! Worth the wait! Service and friendliness is unrivaled. Tables are for smaller parties so if you are a group of 5 or larger, consider a to go order. This place was reflective of its yelp reviews. Thank you J's for an amazing dinner!

  • Doug F.

The $12 halibut 3 piece was crispy but over cooked, fries average, clam chowder thick and gloppy and not flavored well, place was crowded at 6pm on Friday and one server meant customers were cleaning and wiping down their own tables. I'd go earlier but not at peak time, but likely would't bother going back again.

Went here on vacation after reading yelp reviews. The place smelled of fish. Your food is cooked to order, which takes 10+ minutes. It was tasty. Enjoyed every last bite. Awesome tartar sauce. Small place I would recommend to go to any of the nearby beauty spots.

I was completely impressed with the food! It's a small restaurant with limited seating. We ordered take out, 6 fish and chip baskets and they gave us 7 as they thought it took too long! All our meals came with sodas to go as well! They also included plenty of tarter sauce, malt vinegar, and cocktail sauce. The fish was Awesome!!!!! I can't believe we have been coming here for years and this was a first!!! Kids loved it too!

My family spends one week each summer at the Oregon coast. This is our favorite place for fish and chips. We make at least one trip here during each visit. The other reviewers are right - get the homemade salt n pepper chips!! My parents really like the fish and chips. I'm a fan of the friend shrimp and coleslaw. We introduced my niece to fish and chips here two years ago and she still talks about it. You would be surprised how much fish and chips a small child can put away! The service can be a little sporadic, but isn't that part of the charm of a mom-and-pop type place? You can tell they're really nice and try really hard. Great food!

  • Ralph S.

Great fish! Great slaw! We got the Family Cod meal. It's a great deal. For $25 you get a meal that will feed four. You get fish, slaw, fries and four drinks. I wish we were staying another day so I could try the chowder and the halibut. There is a wait. I read other reviews that complained about it, but if your food backs up the need for a wait, then I don't mind a wait at all. J's food is worth every minute you wait. Definitely give this place a try for lunch or get dinner to go. The fish is cooked perfectly and the cuts are almost exactly the same size. This tells me that the person that is preparing the fish and cooking it is paying attention and cares about quality.

J's Fish and Chips seems like something of an establishment in Lincoln City. The folks that run the place are well connected to the local fishing industry and most if not all of the fish/shellfish you get at J's is locally sourced and likely caught by one of the friendly staff's partners. As others have already mentioned, there is a wait time. We arrived 30 minutes after they opened at 11 and there was already a 45 minute wait (but we received our order in a short 30). The coleslaw is pretty great and the tartar sauce is top notch. The breading on the fish isn't the traditional kind you might find in England, more resembling panko; however, it is just plan fantastic. The fish (we had halibut and lincod) was super tasty and super fresh. Overall, a fantastic experience but be prepared to wait for this delectable fish treat. Most folks pull in, see the wait, and promptly return to their car to leave. Resist this temptation and settle in for a real Oregon Coast treat.

Stopped in on the way into town tonight. We got our food to go so can't speak much on the dining experience, but it's a small place with a few seats. We got the halibut fish and chips and clam chowder. Fish and chips were great, chowder was just ok. The potatoes were a little hard and it was oily. Otherwise we can't complain!

The fish and chips are absolutely amazing. The tarter sauce was kinda runny and not worthy of the great fish and chips. Could have just been the sauce that I got. It's a small place that is constantly very busy, so be prepared to wait. But the food is worth it.. and it's an incredible value.

We had lunch here today and the fish and chips are to die for. I've been craving it ever since we had it last time we were here visiting Oregon. So delicious!!

Food was great. We called ahead and took our order to go so we could enjoy our beachfront suite and eat fish and chips in bed! My boyfriend and I both got the sampler platter. One pieces of fish was better than the other, I'm not enough of an expert to know which was which. Shrimp was great also, but two pieces was just a tease. Overall good food, combos came with sodas which was nice and made it a better value.

For $6 I got fish, chips and a drink. Very good deal and the fish was fresh and very crispy, not greasy at all. I read some of the reviews about the weird signage that was around the place and I think they took it down because I didn't see any off putting signs. The decor was nice and the place was clean so I give this place 5 stars. :)

Fantastic! Best fish n chips we have ever had--and we have been on the hunt up and down the Oregon Coast. Halibut and cod are both delicious. Shrimp is fabulous too. Try the combo! Owners are super nice, staff very friendly. Try the homemade salt and pepper chips!

Do I was working out of town. We yelp js. It had great reviews.we were sitting there waiting for my friends and maybe wanting to get more. I look up and the lady with red hair was packing a Togo order scratching her hair. I got up and asked her can you go wash your hands. She came out of the back talking about to the other employees like it was my fault. I got a refund. I asked who was in charge she said she was. I said your the owner yes!!!. DON'T EAT THERE SHE IS RUDE AND GROSS.

What a strange place. It's a dive, and there's very little seating available. It's tiny and has a weird, cheap vibe. But the food is outstanding. Fresh, hot, flaky halibut with the fish and chips that is the best I've had in a long time. Great chowder too. I don't know why people who can prepare and cook food like this work in such a weird joint, but the food is great.

3-piece halibut! Yes, please! We stopped here on a rainy day in Lincoln City. I checked Yelp and I was so very pleased with our meal, the service, and the overall feel of the place. It reminds me of a Maine Lobster Pound: no fuss about decoration or metal utensils because it's all about the seafood. The 3-piece halibut basket was incredible. The cold slaw was delicious. It was near perfection. There was only one tiny downside: it was slightly chilly in the small restaurant and every time the door opened, it felt colder. We kept our coats on. In the spring or summer, I'm sure temp is no problem at all.

Good News: The halibut fish and chip are indeed wonderful. Excellent-quality fish enrobed a crispy-golden panko-based coating. Bad News: The chowder is just chowder, I guess. I expected clam chowder but there were no clams in it. No shrimp. No fish. Nothing from the sea. No bacon even. But, I guess it's my fault. The menu board only says "Chowder." Worse New: There's a sign on the door that says "Support local fisherman. NO MARINE SANCTUARIES." I'll never go back to a restaurant that supports short-sighted fisheries management policies.

Was eating the chowder which wasn't that good, and thought what is that?! It was small piece of twig in the chowder! Check out the picture. I am glad I didn't eat it! There were some pieces of leaves and I thought it could be a Bay leaf stem. However, I have never had that big of a stem in anything I cook and you don't leave the bay leaf in after cooking. The service is lousy and there was a long wait for our food even though it wasn't that busy. The fish was ok, but not worth the bad service, the long wait, and unknown things in your food! The cashier was nice. We asked how much ketchup you get so we could know if we needed to order more. They have a sign at the register, 25 cents for extra sauce but they charge u 50, they have it handwritten on their chalk board as 50 cents for extra sauces. Apparently, they don't give you ANY ketchup with your fish and chips when you order to go. So she said she would put some in and told the younger girl to put it in. But when we got our food from some gal who was working in the back, no ketchup. So my husband asked for it. She said, not even looking at us, "You have to ask for it!" I said, "we did!" She thru the ketchup in and didn't even look at us. You know, your supposed to work to keep your customers happy. They are the reason you have a paycheck. I definitely would not recommend this place. They have sign around, if you get your food to go and want to eat it at their picnic tables, they will be upset if you use their trash cans to through away trash from their food. They say "if you order to go, take it and go! Don't leave garbage in our cans!" They are the only restaurant who has a service fee for using your debit or credit card. They really want you to feel they are doing you a favor by allowing you to come in and give them your business.

Don't waste your time! My husband, three year old, and I attempted to eat at J's because we saw the good reviews for fish and chips. We walked through the door and were immediately told, "Unless you've called in an order in advance, it's going to be at least an hour wait for food." We turned around and walked right out! Not to mention it was very dirty inside. If you have an hour to wait, just drive to Newport and eat at Local Ocean instead.

J's is great if you adjust your expectations accordingly. If you are looking for ambiance, style, attentive waiters, and fresh linens, you won't find any of those things. What you get at J's is excellent fried fish, chowder that rivals anyone's along 101, friendly but busy staff with a casual, family operated vibe, and fast food prices on food that is far better than what the price might indicate. When my family and friends visited J's the restaurant was full so we tried eating outside. After about 10 minutes of high winds and sitting 20 feet from highway traffic, we bagged it up and enjoyed the meal in the rental house.

I really liked this place. We ate here because it was highly rated on . . . oh I can't remember the name of the site. It's like yup or yulp or something. I don't know. It doesn't have the views that other places have. It's nothing fancy, for sure. The fish wasn't wonderful, but I never know what's good during any given time of the year. The food was really well cooked, though. That's what made me like it. The coleslaw was good, the fish (again, not the best fish) was well cooked, the fries were good and the tartar sauce was good. The prices are pretty low, but they do nickel and dime you if you want anything extra (sauces, refills, to use your credit card). I don't mind paying out for what I use, though, as long as it means the meal itself is reasonably priced. I will say I missed the view, but I didn't miss the attitude of that small coastal chain down the road.

July 2013 Another stop at J's Had Fish & Chips and Chowder, my Wife had the fish tacos. Restaurant was busy so the wait was a little long, that's OK, I know they cook everything fresh so its worth the wait. Highly recommended

The best clam chowder and fish and chips I've had this trip. Got there about noon and got the lunch special. But prices are reasonable if you don't get the lunch special. Also got a side of shrimp. Nice sized shrimp and crunchy breading. We also got a side of salt and pepper chips. They're like thick cut potato chips. Yummy! Everything was hot and tasty and we go out of there for $20!

Fish and chips are one of my favorite foods, so a place that boasts excellent Yelp reviews intrigues! I was scared I was going to be that one customer who got so so food, but I was not! The halibut fish and chips are truly some of the best I've ever had and I consider myself to be a connoisseur. I have never eaten fish and chips without tartar sauce- this is the first time I actually thought that tartar sauce ruined the yumminess of the fish! The halibut is super fresh and mild. NO fishiness! Fries are good, cole slaw is average. But a meal of fish, fries, cole slaw and drink for $12 is a great deal!

I found J's Fish and Chips on yelp when I was in town for a day this weekend and I tried it. I love little mom and pop shops and I was not disappointed. I ordered lingcod freshly caught and curly fries. I was served three big pieces of cod that was moist and tender. The breading was great. The tartar sauce was nice. It was a good sized portioin for just $9. The place is small, but so cute and the lady who served me was very friendly and nice. I recommend this place to anybody.

Really really amazing food! I make sure to go every time I'm in town now! Fish & chips are so delicious! I've had the cod as well as the halibut, both were fantastic! Recently had their clam chowder... Pretty sure it's the best I've ever had. Go early, there will be a line, and they sometimes run out... It's worth the wait!

  • Brenda A.

Solid fish and chips. Chowder is not that great, don't waste the money or the calories eating this. I had the cod fish and chips, since the guy at the register insisted that the cod was better than the halibut. Never heard that before, so I had to try it. The breading is a panko and not the preferred breading of this group. We are more beer batter or tempura. This place is supposed to be the best, so I guess I wanted to be blown away. But we had delicious fish and chips all up and down the OR coast, this was good. Its worth the stop. But it ranks along with other "famous" ones in different towns.

Clean, friendly staff, but best of all the fish was perfect. I ordered the 4 piece basket; cod, halibut, and 2 prawns. Comes with a small coleslaw, tartar sauce, and I had the fresh made salt and pepper chips. The fish was moist, flakey, and hot. The breading stayed crisp from arrival to last bite, and the prawns were perfectly sized. Have the chips, yummy with a splash of malt vinegar or plain. Go early or late here, or you may be waiting for a free table, small space.

The food was really good, menu is simple and not expensive. Seating is very limited so be prepared. If it had more beverage options it would have been 5 stars. Aka a nice beer to enjoy with the meal.

A wonderful place to stop for lunch. We were there in the off season, so there wasn't any waiting and the woman who took our order was very friendly and advised us well on the different fresh fish options available that day. Delicious!

This is the place to go if you want good fish and chips. Make sure to order the halibut because you are on the Oregon coast, not England. This place is a packed out dive that focuses on one thing only and that's making good food. Go there, knowing that you'll have a tough time finding seating, the food will take longer than you may want and the service staff is short handed. But, make sure you go there.

GREAT fish and chips--very fresh--only downside is the breaking is rather thick. Great clam strips too. Offensive signage as well like every other review mentioned.

3 pc cod combo $8.50 and 3 fish tacos for $6 plus 2 drinks! Yes please! I salivate thinking of their food. This place is so delicious! Definitely the BEST fish tacos I've had in Oregon! I can't praise this place enough... Their clam chowder is also amazing, WAY better than MO's at the pier. The customer service here is excellent, it's small and a little cramped but the food more than makes up for it! If you drive by and don't stop in, you're definitely missing out! Californians love their fish tacos, and J's Fish and Chips delivers! I can't wait to come back!

I am continually disappointed by the quality and cost of food when visiting the coast. J's is a refreshing change of pace. The food is very affordable and so good. They hand cut and batter their fish and chips from fresh fish and make the chowder fresh every day. I can honestly say I have never had a better basket of fish and chips. The chowder was tasty and had big chunks of clams and skin on potatoes. The nice Grandma who took our order and made our food was so friendly. She was really pleased when we told her how much we enjoyed the food and even shared a heartfelt high five with my husband. Skip the other fish houses and come to J's if you want affordable honestly good food.

Well food LOOKED good but come to find out they're really strict about the seating process. Limited seating over hour wait even for take out! Even for clam chowder in a bowl figure that one out! May taste very good but the service was very poor. Seems like the kid at the counter wanted to be on the beach. But like I was in a Seinfeld episode with the clam chowder NATZI. Also female behind the counter maybe she wanted to be having some wine on the beach. But overall the food looked very good and very not kid friendly.

Excellent and delicious food. Very friendly staff. The fish here is most likely the best fish in Lincoln city. We will definitely come back. Smaller than most restaurants, and had to wait a little for the food but it was worth it. A+

Great fish and chips! Fresher fish (not the freshest I've had but don't take that the wrong way), quickish service, decent prices. We ordered the fish and chips, but asked to not have the drink it comes with, and there was no discount. Service was clearly working minimum wage in a small town, what can you do. All in all not a bad place, we'd go again, but I'm not super excited about it. Seating is VERY limited probably only 7 tables for 2-4 max.

Tiny food for the price! The clam chowder had NOTHING in it. Milky broth with absolutely no ingredients but I did get lucky and get the bay leaf. Our fries were incredibly not fresh and the ketchup was obviously very watered down. The cole slaw was in a sample cup size container and the chowder was hardly bigger. Our table was not wiped down between customers and the wait for the food was incredible. The fish was actually good but not good enough to make up for all the negatives. Tiny food for the price! Easily the best fish and chips anywhere in Lincoln County north of Newport. I prefer cod to halibut, and this place does cod danged well. We needed shelter from a MASSIVE coastal storm, so we left bags of agates (one 4+ inches long, and an inch thick!!) in the car and dripped into J's. The atmosphere here (sort of fast-foody) is nothing to jot the folks about, but unless you are going to dine at the Delicate Palate J's will do nicely. I'm pretty sure they don't serve beer, etc. here, so that might be a drawback at times. I've been here once when the service was friendly, and once when it was a bit surly. I'm not crazy about their clam chowder, but their fried foods are light and appealing.

Little hole in the wall(actually looks like a photo shop) we sampled the following. Combo basket(Fish & chips, shrimp, curly fries) Cup o chowder Clam strips with the fresh made potato chips. The fish was the best of the bunch in my opinion, the Mrs liked the calm strips. Lots of locals, busy @ 1:30 on a Wednesday afternoon. Quite possibly the best Panko battered fish I've had anywhere.

Once we located J's (we drove by several times as there is no road side sign, and the building isn't very well lighted), we had terrific fish and chips. The halibut was flaky, the breading light, it was beautifully cooked. We chose the curly fries, which were adequate. I think next time I'd like regular fries, and hope they're fresh made, not frozen. The owner's sister was charming, and we hope she had her friend did well at this weekend's cook off!

I don't know why so few places can prepare the simplest meals so exquisitely. The fried fish is simply the best I've had anywhere. Their home-made chips are every bit as good as the fries. The cole slaw was great. I never knew shrimp could be so juicy. This is the kind of place that would make the cordon bleu world completely irrelevant, if it was't so rare.

We tried Mo's.(nice staff, bad food) We tried the Newport Chowder Bowl. (chowder was nice and staff was nice). Then we were told by a local that J's was the place to go. They were soooooo right. YUM!! The fish is made to order and it is perfectly cooked. Nice portions of it as well. The breading is so light and tasty and does not over power the fish. The curly fries were very nice and the in house chips were gorgeous. The chowder was a little creamy for my husband, but I liked it and I found the clams in it to be tender and tasty. The lady at the front was super friendly and the place was clean and tidy. All in all, we are sorry we went to all the other places and didn't just start with J's. Please keep in mind, it is a small place and things are made to order so plan for some wait time. It will be worth it.

Worth the wait, don't get discouraged by the line. It's a some hole in the wall with great customer service and delicious food. We order the family deal which was 10 pcs cod with curly fries, coleslaw and four drinks for 25 dollars. The tartar sauce was really good and we also ordered the clam chowder which is really good.

Best fish and chips by far!!!! Fresh ling cod with a delicate breading. Very friendly and helpful woman running the cash register. Chowder has some weird herb or spice in it. I think they are trying to make it gourmet. I would like it better plain. Typical tiny, hole in the wall, decor.

We got the halibut fish and chips and clam chowder for a late lunch. Both were delicious. We didn't have to wait for a table, it was the Sunday after Thanksgiving.

Sorry to say that our experience was not the greatest. We read the reviews, with great hopes, and went in for a late lunch - about 3:45 p.m. We were treated rudely by the staff first thing. We noticed a lot of posted signs in the place, like they were mad at people or something. We felt like we'd better do things their way or else. Nevertheless, we were giving them the benefit of the doubt. The food was delicious. The seafood was so fresh tasting, and the breading on our fish was delicious. But the portions were much too small for the price. So, because of the rude staff and the overpriced meals, we will not go back, and we would not recommend this place to others.

  • Bradley C.

Lucky us! We walked in just as the only available table was finished eating. If we would have been there 5 minutes later it would have been impossible to be seated for at least 30 minutes. The place is small especially cosidering the popularity. We decided on halibut and chips. The halibut was probably the best fish and chips I have ever eaten. The amount of batter to fish was perfect and not a drop of grease that I could determine. The recommendation of salt and pepper chips over the french fried type was true to the point. They were cut thin and wow were they tasty. The service was friendly even though the place was full. I looked around for unfriendly signage but I am happy to say that I could not discover any. "The only sign i saw was one over the trash asking (with the word PLESE) that people not dump drinks and their plastic trays into the trash. I will rememer J's as the best eating experience on the Oregon Coast.

Good - food is outstanding. Bad - facility is way too small. Ugly - service is so horrible that in spite of 5 star food, I have to award 1 star overall. On an earlier visit we noted that service was extremely slow and inefficient, but hey it's not too busy tonight so give them another chance. Ordered chowder and the ling cod special, wife ordered chowder and rockfish special. Drinks come out after 5 minutes. Another 5 minutes later the chowder. 10 minutes pass... 15 minutes ... 20 minutes. Something is clearly wrong as we're now 30 minutes in and it's really not that busy. I go up to the counter, get blank stares when I point out our wait and the fact 3 other customers who came in after us had been served. Eventually the nice blonde haired lady figured out that our ticket had been pulled when the chowder was delivered and was still sitting on the counter. Lots of "sorries", but by that point sorry isn't sufficient. Another 5-10 minute wait and food arrives with another "sorry". I'm sorry too... tonight was the last straw and we won't be back. If you are looking for takeout, this is a good bet. Otherwise, stay away. Frustrating to see a great product crippled by poor execution and undersized facilities.

The local place was recommended to us by a fellow beach comber on a busy holiday weekend. Once we were there and in line to order it was apparent that this is the place to go if you want fish and chips in the Lincoln City area. The fish baskets were plentiful, prices were excellent, and the atmosphere was a cozy, comfortable setting. The wait for our food was a bit long, but only exasperated due to hunger. The food was well worth the wait, and you can't rush fish and chips. Overall: excellent and will visit again when in the area.

What a great place at the coast! Enough options to keep it interesting, tasty, perfect amount of breading and crispiness, and quality seafood. Wish I'd come back to try the clam strips or clam chowder! Friend got the red snapper, I had the fried shrimp, which I was told he peels himself. Great portions, everything tasted fresh, good coleslaw, and the service was fantastic. They have kids options, weekday lunch specials, and even more to help make it affordable. This is one place, that adds to my yearning to move to the beach. She cutely said that they try to live up to the good reviews. I respect that, they did perfectly, and I hope they keep it up! =)

We came here originally because of the fish tacos... We went to the fish taco cook off in Lincoln City, and Js won. But I ended up ordering the fish and chips. My wife got a couple of the fish tacos, We shared them, but the fish and chips were definitely the winner IMO. Good batter, very crispy, no sog. Good portions, fries not so good, kind of soft. I like crispy fries with my crispy fish... Price was right. Busy, seating is good, and parking is fine. The chowder was ok, had better but have had worse too. This place is a dive, but the fried fish is very good.

One of the places you have to stop by in Lincoln city for fish and chips. We got there at 4 on a Sunday, they close at 6 on Sundays, they had about a scoop of clam chowder left and it was amazing. The fried fish wasn't oily at all, perfectly seasoned, also the salt and vinegar chips were very good . I recommend to come early for the clam chowder and seats. If you have a group of 4+ it may be hard to find a seat especially if its busy. Good price for the amount and quality of the food.

Quality fresh fish, good people. The only downside is they serve Shark. Which I don't care for sharks being used for food since they are actually pretty brutally harvested nowadays. They aren't exactly Cod. That being said im no activist. Excellent Cod and Shrimp! Very reasonable prices. The Clam Chowder was a major let down. Very bland and tasteless.

After reading a lot of the reviews, my wife and I decided to give J's Fish and Chips a try. We are so glad we went. I had the Cod basket and my wife had the Fish Taco's. My wife said the fish taco's were AWESOME and the Cod basket was also AWESOME. The service was great and friendly. I would recommend J's Fish & Chips to anyone traveling through Lincoln City.

So dang good.... Visited Lincoln city with my boyfriend, best fish n chips I've ever had. To the person complaining about local fisherman and etc, you are seriously basing a restaurants quality over what they believe in? I guess it should be okay for others to judge you by your narrow minded opinion. Yelp is to rate by the food quality and etc, not by the personal stances. Don't rate if you can't do it properly. Thanks.

Best clam chowder in the region, and probably the best fried fish I've ever had. The place reminded me of the dive shacks I used to frequent on the Jersey Shore, except that it was cleaner. The hostess was a wealth of knowledge and shared readily after she discovered we were from out of town. We arrived pretty late in the evening but the food was still fresh and delicious. Having to bring a key outside the building to use the bathroom was amusing (very reminiscent of the Jersey Shore) but the food was too good and the service too kind for me to hold that against them.

Best Fish-n-Chips in Lincoln City! Or, anywhere else on the Oregon coast! The halibut is fresh cut. The batter is crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. The best value fish-n-chips! Friendly staff! The coleslaw is just okay, as are the fries. But, the fish is the best in Lincoln City

  • Denise R.

With most every restaurant on the coast offering fish and chips, more often than not, they're a bit of a disappointment and over priced. Sure, you can pay for the fancy ocean view, or comfy booth, but if you're really interested in fresh, crispy, delicious made to order fish and chips at a great price, then go to J's! It's a small joint with a few tables and during traditional meal hours, there's quite a line most of the time. Don't let that stop you! Put in your order, have a bit of patience, and you'll be glad you did. Oh yeah, and instead of the fries being the 'chips', try their salt and pepper fresh made potato chips!

We stopped in for lunch on a summer weekday, and later in the afternoon, so we didn't have a long wait. I can totally see this place being packed on a summer weekend. Anyway, I thought the service was great - the gal at the counter was super friendly, and assured us she'd have a table for us soon. She checked on us throughout our meal as well. So despite other reviews about bad service, I didn't see any. Yes, read the signs - all they want you to do is order at the counter before you sit down, which is reasonable to me. Now, the food. Yes. Wow. Okay friends, realize, this is your classic coastal fish and chips place. If you're looking for a fancy dining experience, this isn't it. But if you're looking for amazing food, this is it. I got the shrimp and chips, and it was delicious. My friend got the halibut and raved about it. Prices were very reasonable. I live on the coast, and I've had a lot of fish and chips. This is definitely up there among the top three I've had around here. So if you're looking for an excellent lunch stop, and you've got time to wait if it's busy, don't pass this up. I'll definitely be back!

Thanks for the reviews Yeppers! Our family has found a new favorite. We too ordered the 4 piece combo. Delish!!! Perfectly cooked seafood and fries and much to my surprise even the coleslaw was yummy. The batter they use on the shrimp and fish is so light and crispy. The portions were really nice too. Perfect meal! Our son ordered the clam chowder and he loved it. My husband and daughter both tried bites of it and said it was great. Our daughter said she will definitely be ordering the chowder next time we visit. The lady behind the counter was so friendly! She was the order taker, server, and phone person. She did all the jobs well and with a smile! Great customer service. The place was a bit fishy smelling but what else would it smell like, being that it is a fish and chips restaurant?? It is tight quarters and only about 6 tables inside and 1 picnic table outside. You may want to have a plan B on where to eat this delish food if the restaurant is busy. I encourage you to try it. We will definitely be back.

DE-LISH! This place is extremely deceiving... it's in a weird part of town, the building isn't very visually appealing, it's tiny inside, and they aren't the most welcoming when you walk in the door. The fish is fresh and perfectly fried. Their menu is ridiculously affordable, and most of the food comes with a drink or their homemade potato chips. I had the Halibut fish and chips, and it was the best Halibut I've ever had. Truly the best, freshest seafood in Lincoln City!

We ate at J's today coming through Lincoln City after reading all the reviews. We got there right when they opened and there was a line. It was good. The fish isn't overly battered. It's kind of a cross between panko breading and normal. The service was brash and cut. To some people I could see it coming across as rude. It's small and first come first serve. I would go back if I was in town and wanting fish and chips.

Fish and chips are either killer or the biggest greasiest disappointment in a basket. This place is owned and run by locals and the fish is FRESH!!! I had the halibut basket with homemade potato chips. The batter was light, crunchy, and perfectly browned while the fish moist and mouth watering. The homemade chips were what every pringle wishes it was. Can we please eat ever meal here while in Lincoln City? Please!

This place is a true discovery. It's small, and can only seat 20 people at 7 tables. We were lucky to be served immediately, but the wait can go up to 40 minutes on busy days. The people are smiling and welcoming, and immediately create the perfect atmosphere. The halibut and the cod are delicious, probably the best fish&chips we've had in years. Their house-cut fried potatoes with salt&pepper are memorable, as their light and crisp coleslaw. You MUST stop here if you're driving through town. Also, considering it's mostly fried food, you cannot smell any fried oil in the restaurant: a good premise for the amazingly light and tasty fish. 5 stars, and the promise to come back soon.

We came 2 days in a row, 2nd day had to wait 1/2 an hour but worth every minute. We had the clam chowder-seriously the best I have ever had. Halibut, ling cod, and cod. I will go back as often as possible. Best place in LC unless you are in a hurry.

Yes, it is small inside and yes there are no frills but....the food was excellent and the service I received was too. I had the 3 piece Halibut fish and regular fries with coleslaw. The fries tasted like they just cut them that morning, not frozen food service but fresh potatoes. The fish was absolutely wonderful. The batter is crispy panko crumbs, very light and delicate. Their tartar sauce was very good. Coleslaw was fresh, not soggy and not gloppy with dressing. I could not finish all the fries. The gal working the counter was very friendly and my food was out quick even though there was a line. I'll be back for sure.

You will not be disappointed if you are looking for great fish and chips! Non-greasy, light breading. We don't know how we missed this place, but it is definitely on our good list. After several visits, fish and clam chowder are still delicious, but the service can be quite slow. Also, we went with a non-fish eater and found out that the chicken strips and fries are frozen, purchased from the local grocery. Too bad they couldn't bread their own chicken in the same coating as the fish.

Had the 10pc family-style halibut dinner with their homemade chips and it was really good. There were only 3 of us and we managed to eat EVERYTHING which included the fish, chips, slaw and soda. They use a panko-style breading on the fish which gives it a nice crunch without being too greasy. I could only eat 2 big pcs of fish but the guys inhaled the rest with no problem. I wish I could have eaten more but I have a low grease tolerance and I hit my limit sooner than later (no fault of J's, I mean we are talkin' about fish n' chips so there's gotta be some grease factor involved!). J's is a solid 4-stars.

Thank you Yelpers!! I came down to my beach house in Lincoln City with my dog. I got into town around 6 PM on Friday. I was having a drink, staring at the Pacific, debating what to do for dinner. I had a craving for fish and chips. I hit Yelp up and found this place. I have driven by this place hundreds of times and actually noticed it, but thought it looked a little sketch... Boy was I wrong. This place has AMAZING halibut fish and chips. I ordered the 3 piece. Nice big pieces of fish lightly battered and cooked to perfection. This place knows what they are doing. I got there kind of late and there kind of late for this place (almost 8). There was a big group that had just left. I had the place to myself so I went back to talk to the cashier/cook about where they get their fish. She explained it was sorced locally--which of course I like to hear. The best part was I saw her hand dipping the fresh fish in the egg batter and into the flour mixture--another very good sign... She was super nice... Couple things. Make sure you get the chips. No, NOT the fries--the FRESH MADE Salt and Pepper Chips. These are thinly sliced fresh potatoes that they deep fry. Maybe the best complement to some good battered fish that I have ever had... Don't mess this up--get the salt and pepper chips! :) I will probably continue to do take out--because my house is so close and the atmosphere is like a Dairy Queen, but smaller... Not to say there is anything wrong with that--this place is all about its food--which I like... OK. So why only 4 stars--actually 4.5. One reason. I have only been there once. My plan is to grab some take out chicken for my wife next time (she doesn't do seafood) while I revisit the halibut fish and chips--probably won't ever order anything else--why ruin a perfect thing... Update to come...

We just got back from Js. We had heard about it and went on a non busy day. No wait. I tried to get 2 piece halibut....no go so I got the cod lunch special and he got the 4 piece combo. He only got 3 pieces of fish...1 shrimp 1 cod 1 halibut. His fries were so underdone they were white. His coleslaw was average. My chowder was hot but had very little flavor...mostly potato. Mos, Anchor Inn and Fathoms all have better chowder. When she asked how it was I said the fries were underdone. She had some strange excuse about when you change the oil blah blah. I will say the fried fish was good. But not so good that we'll be back! Sorry Js. Glad we didn't wait 40 minutes!

Fantastic fish... Would have given 5 stars if the chips were fresh cut, cole slaw fantastic, chowder ok. What's up with the fifty cent soda refill? Will go back without question!

I was able to get treated for my gluten-allergy through NAET recently so when I was in Eugene over the weekend I made a special trip just for J's Fish and Chips on Saturday night. I made it right as they closed and got to taste the incredible fish and chips with very friendly service. Thank you!

Great fish & chips! This is a must go place in Lincoln City and beyond. Also, MUST have the homemade chips. It's as good as it gets.

If Fish and Chips was only about the fish, this place would rock. But the fries were mushy and tasteless and the coleslaw and tarter sauce were clearly not homemade. But the political statement against sustainable fisheries on the door as you walk in didn't do much for my appetite either. I would have left if there had been time to go somewhere else. In this day and age, I don't see the wisdom in continuing the fishing free-for-all that is diminishing our future. Anyway, after ordering we gave our card to pay for lunch and we were informed that we'd be charged another 25 cents for the transaction. Really? Nickel and dime much? We pulled out cash; it's not about convenience for the customer here. If this place wasn't a hole in the wall and the fries, tarter sauce and slaw had matched the flavor and freshness of the fish, I'd have been happy to give it four stars in spite of the politics. But I doubt on the coast there's a need to give up so much flavor in order to get ahold of good fish. So, I can't muster more than two. We have been there at least four times now and thoroughly enjoy the food, it is simple and tasty. The place isn't fancy and there isn't much seating, if you have to wait a bit it's worth it. I would have loved if they kept a fresh pot of local coffee brewed but that doesn't change my rating.

I came to J's while vacationing in Oregon. It's a small place and it seems like most people get takeout. However, we ate there and since I sat near the heater it was warm and pleasant. I had clam chowder and half of a four piece combo with salt and pepper chips. The chowder was awesome and the rest was great too. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to enjoy some deep fried goodness and great chowder!

Fish and chips done right. The batter they use on the cod was amazing. Light flaky and crispy. Servers were a little grumpy but it's a diner and it adds character. If they were rude it would have been a different story. 25 bucks got us 10 pieces of cod, fries and coleslaw. Good deal. Will go back anytime I'm in Lincoln City.

This place is a hidden gem!!! I dont know how healthy their clam chowder is but DAMN!!! is it good! You can taste the cream & butter as your eating it and it tastes so good...I wanted them to sell me a bucket to bring back home! I also ordered a 4pc combo (2 shrimp/1 cod/1 halibut fish n chips) and everything was top notch. Next time i will probably just order the halibut because it was exceptional, it just melts in your mouth. I may even head back to the coast next week to take the whole family here cause it was that good. If your in Lincoln City and want fish n chips, this is the place!!! P.S. Best homemade salt n pepper chips i've ever had!!!

Pretty proper fish and chips! You walk in to the aroma of oil. YES!!! Kinda of a hole in the wall with limited seating, but I would rather them focus on the food anyway The lady serving us seem to be bumbling around a bit but was nice, and attentive enough (she did say she only works there in a pinch). We both got the combo(Halibut, Cod, and a pair of shrimp) and fries. All were cooked correctly, in the right temp oil to keep oil penetration to a minimum, fish was flaky, and fries were not stale or over salted. Wifie like the crunchy , fresh coleslaw, I am not a fan, so no opinion from me. adding mushy peas, and a dark wood interior would have put me back to my first pub experience in London. good value for money on this pub grub.

The best fish and chips I've ever had at the coast! I had the halibut an my boyfriend had the cod. Flaky, moist, fresh, GOOD! Coleslaw was okay, fries and clam chowder left a lot to be desired, but who cares when you have such great fish? I'll definitely come back here next time I'm in Lincoln City!

Our first visit was a let down, but only because they ran out of food and closed early. Dinnertime is normally 6-ish...maybe 6:30, and it was shortly after 7 on a Sunday night when we arrived. Posted on the door was a sign which read, "Open Daily 11:30 til close", and I was a bit taken aback (yes, I'm known for my dramatic flair), but thanks to Yelpers like Deeandra H. and Linsay L. I definitely went back. The following morning at 11:36 am (aye 6 minutes after they opened), we were the third group of patrons through the door. I wasn't going to chance J's Fish and Chips running out of deep fried deliciousness on my last day at the coast, so it was meal number one for the day! Carol was working the counter and was SUPER nice. She recognized us from the previous night and was glad we made it back to a limitless selection from their menu. We ordered four things: a combo and a cod basket (both included their homemade potato chips and drinks), the fish taco basket (which contained three tacos and a drink), and a side of their onion rings. After about 10 minutes and a surprisingly large number of other patrons trickling in, the food started to trickle out. Carol brought four baskets of golden, hot, crispy, freshly fried deliciousness to our table. Every piece of fish, fry, potato and onion ring were cooked to order and fried to perfection. Oil was in the air, but not lingering in our baskets, and that's good to know when choosing a fish & chips place. I don't think I've ever been in a place with so much hot oil in the air. My eyes were burning, but it was WORTH it! Next time J's Fish and Chips will be one of my first stops when visiting, or passing through, or anywhere near Lincoln City!
